Mock Draft Recap: Big Twelve
05/14/2009
After three drafts of wondering if I picked the right quarterback or struggling to round out my lineup with a second wide receiver, there was no such worry or regret following this week's draft. It was Big Twelve Mock Draft night and everyone walked away feeling like they just hit the lotto. After all it is hard to go wrong when you're picking from a league that saw Oklahoma State quarterback Zac Robinson go in the 8th round...Full Article |

Spring Wrap: Sun Belt
05/13/2009
([photo/Icon SM) It's very easy to forget about the teams from the Sun Belt. Sure, you may get lucky enough to see one of them on an odd weekday game, or maybe catch a fleeting glimpse of another as you're trolling deep into the ESPN GamePlan package on Saturday. But let's face it, they simply don't get as much air time as the schools from the BCS conferences. Or even Mountain West, WAC, MAC or C-USA for that matter...Full Article |

Spring Wrap: Pac-10
05/12/2009
(photo/Icon SM)Compared to the other BCS conferences the Pac-10 was relatively quiet this spring. It's business as usual in most places out west. Sure the big news was the fact that Oregon conducted its first spring practice in 14 years without Mike Bellotti at the helm, but even this transition to Chip Kelly appears so seamless that we don't expect the Ducks to miss a beat. ..Full Article |

Spring Wrap: MAC
05/05/2009
The MAC continues to climb the charts of fantasy-worthy conferences, and spring practice reports support our opinion that those in All-120 leagues would be very wise to camp out in the conference known as the "Cradle of Coaches." Yet even if you decide to pass on these under-the-radar gridders on draft day you’ll want to keep tabs on MAC players all season. This is a conference where a walk-on can suddenly emerge as a star fantasy producer, and relatively unknown 5’6” tailbacks can become superstars. ..Full Article |

Spring Wrap: Big East
05/03/2009
(photo/Icon SM)The Big East is, for the most part, a league in transition. Pitt lost its most talented back since Tony Dorsett and Connecticut said goodbye to all-everything workhorse Donald Brown. Rutgers bid adieu to Mike Teel, Kenny Britt and Tiquan Underwood, and of course, Pat White has moved out of Morgantown following his record-setting career. Factor in the dire straits of both Louisville and Syracuse, and it would appear that Cincinnati and South Florida are sitting in the famed catbird’s seat. And they are. But this doesn’t mean you’ll want to focus solely on Bearcats and Bulls...Full Article |

Spring Wrap: ACC
04/29/2009
A cursory look at ACC spring practice happenings shows a few sure things and a whole bunch of positional battles that will linger into the season. We think we have a potential breakout back in Tallahassee, and we know we have some very promising quarterbacks ready to make that next step. Yet we still cannot say for certain who will emerge at may key positions in traditional fantasy hot spots, and this is especially true when it comes to position battles at Clemson, Georgia Tech, Miami and even Virginia Tech. Youth will be served in 2009 as some of the conference's best fantasy talents won't be required to declare a major for another year or two, and this will make the ACC a potential drafting goldmine, especially for those playing a little keeper league college fantasy football. ..Full Article |

2010 NFL Draft Look Ahead

We know it’s a little early to be ranking the 2010 NFL draft prospects, as the 2009 draft hasn't even started yet. 2009 NFL Draft: WR Rankings
04/22/2009
As the draft countdown clock continues to tick we move on to a very intriguing group of wide receivers. There are very few 6-5 burners (we’ll have to wait for Julio Jones and DeAndre Brown for those) but there are plenty of multi-dimensional receivers with the ability to gain yards in a variety of methods. While Jeremy Maclin sits atop our WR Big Board he’s by no means the only wideout we see making a major impact on Sunday. As is the case with every other skill position it’s going to come down to the ability to stay healthy and perform in the right system. ..Full Article |

2009 NFL Draft: QB Rankings
04/20/2009
We kick off our 2009 NFL Draft player rankings with the quarterback spot. In reading below, you'll quickly find that we don't think this is a bumper crop of quarterbacks. If not for the Detroit Lions (whose best quarterback the last 20 years has been Erik Kramer) having the #1 pick it is unlikely a quarterback would be selected until a quarter of the way through the first round. Finish Up Strong
04/05/2009
Every year a handful of college fantasy footballers cap fine careers with great senior campaigns. Last year’s winner of our inaugural “Finish up Strong Award” was Florida State’s senior back Antone Smith. The Seminole began his career with a great deal of hype, drawing comparisons to Warrick Dunn. Smith’s first two seasons saw him share carries with Lorenzo Booker, and through three years he had only 11 touchdowns. Then he emerged to the tune of nearly 900 yards and 16 scores, causing owners who had tossed Smith back into the lake to lament their horrible misfortune...Full Article |

Top Fantasy Offenses to Raid in 2009

Assembling your preseason draft board is without a doubt one of the most enjoyable aspects of fantasy sports. You'll likely spend countless hours in self-debate about who's your top quarterback, running back and wide receiver. Even more time will be spent scouting sleeper picks. Some People are Easy to Dislike
03/19/2009
Shortly after he was hired as coach at Ohio State University back in 2001 Jim Tressel spoke to a crowd of over 18,000 Buckeye fans at halftime of an Ohio State vs. Michigan basketball game. During his speech the new coach brought down the house when he said "I can assure you that you will be proud of your young people in the classroom, in the community and most especially in 310 days in Ann Arbor, Michigan." The crowd went wild, and even if it wasn’t an outright guarantee of victory, it did convey the message that John Cooper’s struggles against his archenemy would soon be in OSU’s rearview mirror. Nearly eight years later Lane Kiffin was hired at a traditional power, and while musing on what he was eagerly anticipating as new Vols' coach young Mr. Kiffin included “singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year, it will be a blast." And snickers could be heard well beyond Gainesville...Full Article |

College fantasy football scouting begins during spring ball. 2009 Look Ahead: SEC West
03/02/2009
We conclude the BCS portion of our Spring Look Aheads with a peek at the SEC West, a division that offers a comparable number of fantasy factors to its Eastern counterpart. The likes of Charles Scott, Mark Ingram, Julio Jones, Michael Smith and Jevan Snead all return for 2009, though it's always dangerous to start SEC players during much of the rough and tumble conference campaign. Still with the coaching change at Mississippi State and the continued transformation of the Ole Miss offense, we may be witnessing an offensive rebirth in what is often deemed the nation's strongest conference. ..Full Article |

HOF Inductees: Zak Kustok and Damien Anderson
03/02/2009
Before the spread attack truly became chic, two Northwestern Wildcats were driving Big Ten defensive coordinators crazy. Aggressive defensive units overplayed and looked silly, unsure of who exactly had the ball. Did the back just run around end? Did the quarterback go the other way with the ball, or did he step back only to find a wide receiver streaking down the field all by his lonesome? The late Randy Walker began quite the resurgence at Northwestern, and the key components were Zak Kustok and Damien Anderson. Watching Kustok, who initially committed to Notre Dame after a stellar career at Carl Sandburg High School, was pure poetry. Anderson, another Illinois product, was one of the most dynamic backs in recent memory. Together they proved that heady players in innovative systems can outperform their bigger, faster and stronger opponents. ..Full Article |

2009 Spring Football Practice and Game Dates

Spring is just around the corner - so we hear. In the Northeast, we’re at that time of year when Mother Nature plays the cruel joke of teasing us with a 60 degree day, only to follow it up with a week-long freeze-fest. It won’t be long now before the cracking of pads can be heard from campuses across the nation. Not long at all, in fact. Nevada begins their spring practice on Friday. As in TOMORROW, February 20th. Look Ahead: SEC East
02/24/2009
Florida brought another national title back to the SEC East, and they did so with an impressive array of fantasy talent. Tim Tebow’s return will highlight the 2009 campaign, but once we move away from Gainesville we find very few surefire fantasy stars in this division. Of course the SEC will always provide its share of top-flight fantasy defenses, but for a conference that is always deemed to bring in the greatest recruiting hauls, one must wonder if we’re seeing here what often happens in the NFL: defenses that are just too skilled for offensive skill position players to truly shine. ..Full Article |

2009 Look Ahead: Big 12 South
02/23/2009
There’s not much that can be said about the Big 12 South that hasn’t already been discussed. It was the most impressive collection of college fantasy football talent in the country in 2008, and the great majority of it comes back in 2009. Every team but one returns its starting quarterback and each should receive roster consideration in any type of league. And the squads that don’t return their primary ball carrier from a season ago all bring in a stud freshman capable of making an immediate impact. The one team that sees truly significant personnel losses, Texas Tech, is the one program that has shown the greatest ability to withstand key skill position departures while maintaining an incomparable level of offensive production. There is more fantasy talent in this one division than in most conferences, and an early look at the 2009 campaign shows a striking resemblance to 2008. ..Full Article |

Look Ahead: Big 12 North
02/19/2009
From a high-scoring, defense-optional fantasy perspective the Big 12 North is a wonderful draft day destination, offering free-wheeling quarterbacks, sandy beaches and exciting playmakers. Recently owners have built squads on the likes of Mizzou, Kansas and a smattering of Cornhuskers, and they’ve done just fine and dandy. And you can bet your bottom dollar that 2009 will see it remain among the top national fantasy divisions. However because the north side shares a conference with a division that boasts the likes of Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and hell, even Baylor, the Big 12 North is often viewed by owners as the Sam McKinney, the annoying red-headed stepchild who didn’t add much to the Drummond Family on Diff’rent Strokes. ..Full Article |

Look Ahead: ACC Atlantic
02/15/2009
2008's top two fantasy quarterbacks from the ACC Atlantic will return in 09, but each will have to fend off talented youngsters aiming for his job. C.J. Spiller and Da'Rel Scott lead the returning backs, but these two may see some carries vultured by younger backs. At the receiver spot there are just as many questions as number one receivers have moved on while others look to rebound from injury woes. We're not saying the ACC Atlantic should be off limits for fantasy owners, we're just advising that you proceed with extreme caution. ..Full Article |

Don't You (Forget About Me)
02/13/2009
Not every collegiate star sees his career pan out exactly as anticipated. Many don’t finish where they started. Some see injuries, personal or family problems necessitate a detour. Troy Aikman had his career at Oklahoma change immediately following a broken ankle, an injury that allowed Jamelle Holieway take over the starting job and lead Oklahoma to the title back during the height of the mullet era. Aikman headed west to UCLA and the rest, as they say, is history. Zak Kustok began his career at Notre Dame before he transferred to Northwestern and electrified a rejuvenated Wildcat program. More recently BYU great Max Hall began his career at Arizona State. Ben Mauk moved to Cincy after starting in Winston-Salem, and Jevan Snead has helped Ole Miss reach new heights after losing a heated quarterback battle with Colt McCoy. A transfer, unexpected redshirt or family/personal problems shouldn’t cause a fantasy drafter to see a potential risk; rather they should signal an opportunity. Things change, and talented players who land in the right system can become immediate impact players. ..Full Article |

Incoming Freshmen: Running Backs
02/08/2009
Of course we save the best for last. Everyone loves running backs because they usually provide the solid foundation for fantasy teams. It is also the position that will be the most scrutinized by fantasy owners. So we needed to make sure we dotted our I’s and crossed our T’s.
First off let me say that I’m excited about this year’s crop of backs. The combination of talent and opportunity is very promising for fantasy owners. Our top ten freshmen backs are all long on potential and draft-worthy in just about any league. ..Full Article |

Okay I lied. A few days ago I said the quarterback spot was the toughest position to rank from a fantasy perspective. Not true, wide receivers trump the quarterbacks. Incoming Freshmen: Quarterbacks
02/04/2009
It's Feb. 4 and fax machines in university athletic offices everywhere are burning through toner faster than office interns can replace it. Football coaches are wearing tracks in their office carpet as they anxiously wait for their prized recruits to send in their Letter of Intent.
The recruiting season is essentially over and assistant head coaches can finally take a day or two to rest. Unfortunately, for us the work has just begun. With the official LOIs in, it's time to finalize our rankings for incoming freshmen for 2009.
We start with the quarterback spot, the prized jewels of the recruiting season. These are the kids that coaches and recruitniks alike drool over in the offseason. Ironically these are also the same kids that probably won't see the field for another two or three years.
Quarterbacks are the toughest to rank. There are recruits that are on campus early and will get a shot to strut their stuff this spring. And others will arrive in the fall behind a proven starter. We do our best to distinguish the difference in our rankings below.

2009 Look Ahead: ACC Coastal
02/01/2009
While it may never be a hotbed of collegiate football action, the ACC Coastal (home to some of the most beautiful campus settings in the good old USA) is intriguing to this college fantasy fella. There aren’t too many sure-fire fantasy producers, but the division is chock full of potential breakout stars on teams that appear on their way up the food chain. Two traditional powers, Miami and Virginia Tech, return a ton of youthful offensive talent. Georgia Tech brings back its ground game and even adds another potential homerun back for 2009. North Carolina’s Butch Davis continues to stockpile talent while the rivals down in Durham welcome back a talented quarterback and a coach that knows how to get the most out of his offense. Even Virginia, with the return of Jameel Sewell and a shift to, you guessed it, a spread attack, has us at least willing to look towards Charlottesville for a draft day sleeper or two. The ACC Coastal is far from a fantasy treasure trove, but the astute drafter can find plenty of diamonds in the rough here. ..Full Article |

2009 Look Ahead: Big East
01/25/2009
I’ll admit it…even though I love both college football and college fantasy football I often have a hard time getting fired up about the Big East. Maybe it’s because I don’t like games on Friday night, an evening that should be reserved for watching high school football and packing the car for the Saturday tailgating extravaganza. Maybe part of it stems from the uninspired offensive play calling that afflicts many teams from this conference. I don’t know. I do know that the football fan in me has a great deal of respect for the likes of Kelly, Schiano, Leavitt and Edsall, gentlemen who have energized programs and taken them to surprising heights. But the fantasy dweeb in me just wishes the majority of teams would open things up a little bit. Yes, they’ll be some legitimate fantasy talent in the Big East in 2009, but on draft day the fantasy owner will want to treat the Big East like Tijuana: it’s okay to visit but live there and you’ll likely be dead in the water. ..Full Article |

2009 Look Ahead: Pac-10
01/18/2009
Summer of 2008 saw the Pac-10 looking to find replacements for its top three rushers from the season before. Justin Forsett, Jonathan Stewart, and Yvenson Bernard all left huge voids, but each team had different ways to combat these losses back in August. Cal knew it had the talented Jahvid Best ready to emerge as the number one back, but he had serious injury concerns. Oregon’s Jeremiah Johnson would have to overcome some injury history of his own, and there was a chance he’d have to share carries with a talented JUCO in LeGarrette Blount. Oregon State’s carries were wide open. We were certain that someone would emerge, and Ryan McCants seemed like a decent bet. Then he struggled in the opener and a freshman named Jacquizz Rodgers took the gig and didn’t look back. And suddenly the leader of a new bumper crop of running backs had arrived...Full Article |

HOF Inductee: Brock Forsey
01/15/2009
Many believe Ian Johnson is the face of Boise State football, and this is with good reason. His touchdown and ensuing marriage proposal following the Broncos’ classic win over Oklahoma will forever be entrenched not only in the minds of the BSU faithful, but college football fans (and sappy women) nationwide. And a great number, especially those with memories that only go back about five years, believe Mr. Johnson to be the only legendary fantasy back to ever run around the blue turf. And these people are woefully misinformed. On December 31, 1999, the day before the world was tossed into the chaos of Y2K, a freshman running back named Brock Forsey ran for 152 yards, and this kicked off a career for the ages. ..Full Article |

2009 Look Ahead: Big Ten
01/11/2009
Though I’m not a huge fan of piling on, or kicking someone or something when down, it is abundantly clear the in addition to struggling to maintain its status among the BCS elite, the Big Ten football conference also failed to produce a great number of fantasy stars in 2008. For every Javon Ringer and Shonn Greene there were many players (Curtis Painter, Kellen Lewis, Greg Orton) that failed to meet expectations. And with the departures of Chris Wells, Greene, Ringer and Kory Sheets there will be a dearth of running back star power in 2009. Of course, not all hope is lost; and as we’ve emphasized time and time again, when a star leaves a gaping hole in an offensive unit there’s always a hungry whippersnapper ready to step in and seize the day. ..Full Article |

Recruiting: All-American Bowl highlights
01/05/2009
Sunday night CFFI was fortunate enough to scrutinize the future of collegiate football, as the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Florida played host to the Under Armour All-American High School Game for the second-straight year. A virtual showcase of the nation’s most highly-touted high school players comprising the incoming recruiting classes of 2009, Sunday’s contest (televised on ESPN/ESPNU) featured plenty of youthful speed, athleticism, and agility, this as the White Team, coached by ex-NFL head coach Marv Levy, outlasted the Black Team, coached by Mike White of Illinois, Cal, and Oakland Raiders fame, in a hard-fought four-quarter matchup, 27-16...Full Article |

Recruiting: All-American Bowls
12/29/2008
College bowl games are in full swing, and before you know it we’ll be crowning a new National Champion. And sadly that will signal the end of college football games for a painfully long eight months. But there is still plenty of work to be done, and there are just enough college football nuggets to keep us entertained.
We are entering the stretch run of the recruiting season. National signing day is February 4th. Over the next several weeks we’ll be evaluating recruiting video and looking at team rosters with the goal of identifying great fantasy fits for these talented incoming freshman...Full Article |

Holiday bailout packages and stocking stuffers
12/23/2008
Tis the season for giving and all that good stuff, right? Whether it is our government giving out hundreds of billions with no strings, tens of billions in loans with more strings than the inside of a baseball, or regular Americans giving gifts to their loved ones, nothing says giving or the holidays more than money and material possessions. And as proud Americans we’re going to do our part. With a whole bunch of IOU’s (that’s as good as money, sir) as payment we’re going to offer some presents to some of the more prominent national college football players and programs...Full Article |

2009 Bowl Primer: Your Fantasy Guide
12/17/2008
Maybe it’s the stress that accompanies typical activities of the holiday season: shopping, seeing family that you, with good reason, only see once a year, the work Christmas party, and apologizing to the boss the day after the Christmas party. Whatever the reason, it’s clear that owners, neglecting the truly important stuff of the holiday season, often don’t spend enough time looking at intangibles before making out their bowl game lineups. After all it’s easy to simply stare at the bowl game slate and treat these games just as one would a regular season contest. These players perform for the same teams that have played more than 12 games, so it should be easier to fill out those lineups, right? Wrong. ..Full Article |

HOF Inductee: Brad Smith
12/15/2008
I’m sure there are some young pups out there that wonder if Missouri even had a quarterback prior to Chase Daniel. And even to more seasoned college football fans it must seem like #10 has been dealing for the Tigers for about eight years, and this is due in part to the fact that Daniel saw action in ten games as a freshman. How soon we forget. Back in 2005 Missouri played Daniel to help plan for the coming departure of their record-setting quarterback.

It's Bowl Time!
12/09/2008
Establishing our bowl game player ranks takes many of the same factors as the regular season rankings into account: offensive strengths and weaknesses vs. defensive strengths and weaknesses, how a team finished the regular season, offensive tendencies, and even location, location, location. And subsequently, location plays a role in a bowl game component often overlooked: motivation. How much a player and his team are fired up about that trip to (insert fabulous bowl destination here) plays a huge role in bowl game performance. ..Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week 15
12/07/2008
There’s something really anticlimactic about the way the greatest regular season in sports comes to an end. Sixteen games, with many one-sided affairs due to teams simply playing out the string, is a stark contrast to the many heart-pounding thrillers that made up a typical 2009 college football Saturday. And even when an individual performance makes news this late in the college fantasy football year, it’s often done when an owner’s season has already concluded. So performances like Jahvid Best’s incredible 16.4 yards per carry on his way to 311 yards and four scores or Mike Teel’s seven touchdown passes often leave their owners bitter, cursing the horrific timing of each. ..Full Article |

Not a College Football Fantasy: Coaching Cronyism
12/05/2008
A recent press release by The Black Coaches Association stated “there are now only four African-Americans, a Latino and a Pacific Islander as head football coaches in the FBS.” And considering the recent trend of promoting key assistants as “coaches in waiting” at schools like Florida State, Texas and Oregon (three of the most coveted head coaching jobs in the entire country) it doesn’t appear like many schools are concerned with going through a search process to seriously consider minority candidates. Of course if they did there likely wouldn’t be too many coaches of color to choose from at the assistant level, as it appears that an obscene number of coaches are related to some of the most prominent head coaches in the land. Thus the Black Coaches Association may be left with one answer in their quest to increase the number of African-American coaches in the country: Demand that Randy Shannon, Turner Gill and Kevin Sumlin hire all of their relatives and/or have a ton of kids. ..Full Article |

Early Entry Watch List
12/02/2008
We’ve reached the time of year when the top underclassmen in the country are bombarded with questions on whether they will declare early for the NFL draft or stick around for another year. For those that still have conference championship games to be played or bowl games to prepare for we can expect the politically correct “I’m not thinking about that right now” answer. For others with nothing left to play for, we could start seeing the 2009 NFL draft and eventually the 2009 college (fantasy) football season take an early shape. ..Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week 14
12/01/2008
In 2006 James Casey retired from professional baseball. He was 22 and had spent the previous three years trying to climb beyond the Rookie League of the Chicago White Sox before he was let go. So, his baseball career done, Casey decided to give college a try, and he thought he might like to play a little football while matriculating. The native of Azle, Texas had Rice on his list of destinations and the Owl coaching staff eventually found out about Casey. And they decided to give him a shot. Yesterday, at the ripe old age of 24 James Casey put the lid on a sophomore campaign for the record books, as he caught 12 balls for 172 yards and three touchdowns. And he ran for a score. And he threw a touchdown. And when the victory over Houston was complete James Casey went home to his wife to celebrate a season that saw him account for an incredible 20 scores...Full Article |

Start or Sit: Festive Holiday Edition
11/26/2008
Years ago the BCS claimed that it was doing away with margin of victory, and good sports reveled in the apparent elimination of 60-point victories. After all, it was bad enough to schedule a bunch of lousy teams, but it was even worse to embarrass a bunch of overmatched players. Now, with the craziness that is the Big XII tiebreaker formula (highest BCS standing) we have some scary offensive units likely having carte blanche to run up the score. And while Oklahoma State has the horses and home crowd to hang with their in-state rival, don’t expect the Sooners to take their foot off the gas should they start rolling. And things could be really, really bad for Texas A&M and Baylor, but really, really good for owners of Texas and Texas Tech offensive stars...Full Article |

A Second Look
11/24/2008
The conclusion of the college fantasy football regular season corresponds with the onset of holiday hype. Men wearing funny suits distribute bowl bids, and then a man in his own funny suit distributes presents. And while each gift giver is old, beloved and likely tipsy when he hands out his offering, each is welcomed with open arms. Of course even though each team’s original wish list included a BCS bowl, and my list always includes a condo in Grand Cayman, we are nonetheless pleased when something nice is given, even if it isn’t the perfect present. ..Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week Twelve
11/15/2008
Saturday, November 15, 2008 was beginning to look like the fantasy dud we feared it would be. Sloppy conditions, conservative play calling and uninspiring performances appeared in cahoots, with the collective goal of turning fantasy playoff battles into defensive slugfests. Owners, many who had entered battle on Saturday with their superstar sitting on his couch and eating Cheetos in places like Norman, Lubbock and East Lansing, were forced to live and die with every scoring chance, uncertain of how many would remain in the day. And then, as daylight turned into darkness, fantasy stars seized the opportunity, and playoff outcomes changed drastically. And a week that had failed to live up to the high expectations set by a season of colossal clashes, concluded with some great individual performances as the clock moved towards midnight...Full Article |

You were well aware but willing to overlook it back in August. It was a risk you were ready to take, because it was only one week, even if the bye would fall right smack in the middle of the playoffs. After all, the chance to nab a Graham Harrell, Sam Bradford, DeMarco Murray, Javon Ringer or Michael Crabtree was too much to pass up, and someone, anyone, would emerge to plug the huge Week 12 gap in your lineup. Now, following a season of fantasy success, you’re suddenly staring at a very tense Saturday without the services of your fantasy star, the player that has carried you to this point. And while college football fans lament a Saturday lacking in primetime matchups that have dominated recent headlines, college fantasy football fans are gearing up for the biggest week of the season. ..Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week 11
11/09/2008
If your league is anything like ours, a definite premium is placed on true freshmen. Our league’s official by-laws state that all drafted freshmen receive automatic keeper status for the following year. This means that once the dust from signing day clears, owners aren’t just doing research on the top national recruits; they’re also looking at under the radar guys that could fill a role in a productive offense, and this makes the early rounds of the draft much more unpredictable. Typically the majority of true freshmen grabbed early in the draft play running back. As we’ve mentioned time and time again, running back is a spot where coaches are more willing to overlook youthful mistakes in hopes of catching lightning in a bottle. And while the 2008 college football season has seen many young backs emerge as future stars, two studs stand above the rest. Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers and Alabama’s Mark Ingram appear fully prepared to lead the next crop of great fantasy backs.

11/05/2008
Saturday night, the biggest evening in Texas Tech’s football history, was even sweet for longtime fantasy owners. Ever since the great Mike Leach took over the program in 2000 the Red Raiders have been the New York Yankees, Manchester United, and Dallas Cowboys to college fantasy football, even if traditional college football fans only knew them as the school that scored lots of points and stuff. Their prolific offense has made this team the one to watch. Hell I know owners who ordered ESPN Gameplan specifically to watch Tech’s games. Fantasy dweebs won championship trophies on the arms and legs of Kliff Kingsbury, B.J. Symons, Wes Welker, Taurean Henderson and many others. The team’s games often mirrored pinball games rather than gridiron battles. And while it’s easy to dislike programs that win games 72-3, there have always been a couple of reasons to love the Red Raiders...Full Article |

Waiver Wire: Week Eleven
11/03/2008
There’s a saying that goes along the lines of “dance with who brought you” and in life, this does seem like solid advice. However in the world of college fantasy football, the saying should be “dance with who gives you the best shot to advance.” A number of head-to-head leagues will kick off their playoffs this week, and total points leagues are nearing their end. And while it’s tempting to stick with the lineup that has gotten you to this point, owners must realize that there’s nothing wrong with sending one of your regular starters to the bench when a clearly better option is present...Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week Ten
11/01/2008
It’s easy, and it makes sense, to name the player that scores the most points the college fantasy football season MVP. To many, one of the most prominent strengths of the fantasy world is that intangibles are taken out of the equation; gutty locker room leaders don’t win fantasy championships. Stats rule, and that’s the nice and tidy way it is. Still, it’s hard to turn off the part of our college football brain that realizes what it takes for real teams to succeed, and we do like to overlook the ho-hum brilliance of Graham Harrell, and search for a true breakout player...Full Article |

Saturday Rewind: Week Nine

When one tailgates satellite dish-free for five hours, sits in a large stadium where phone or internet service is a pipe dream, and then celebrates for a couple hours following the game, he feels a little disconnected from the rest of the college football world. When this fella then falls asleep with buffalo wings and a newly-opened Heineken on the hotel night stand next to him, he wakes up wondering just what happened in that Ohio State and Penn State game that he remembers tied at 3-3. He’s then able to shake off the cobwebs, drag his 33-year old bones out of the bed, accidentally wake up his better half, and saunter over to the laptop. Saturday Rewind: Week Eight
10/19/2008
I’m not breaking new ground. I’m not saying anything that fantasy owners haven’t thought about in recent seasons. But as the 2008 college fantasy football season nears playoff time, it’s becoming crystal clear that a good quarterback performance simply isn’t good enough. 300 yards and three touchdown passes likely please the coach, pacify the alumni and provide for team victories. However these numbers will fail to placate those demanding fantasy owners.

09/13/2008
The bad weather notwithstanding, September 13, 2008 was an outstanding day for college (fantasy) fans. At one point late in the afternoon we had Spurrier trying to will a win over the 2nd ranked Bulldogs, Purdue letting one get away against Jeremiah and Blount Force Trauma, and an intriguing Battle of the Techs: Virginia and Georgia. Hell even those stuck in the Bo and Lou era had the slopfest in Notre Dame at their disposal.
