Another Thursday night, another post-Spring mock draft at CFFinsider.com. Tonight
Jim Belanger, Alex Esselink and I welcomed Michael Hurcomb, CBSSportsline.com fantasy writer extraordinaire,
to our little SEC draft fiesta. Prior to entering the real world Michael matriculated
at that little school in Gainesville, thus not only were we dealing with a college
fantasy football guru, but one with first-hand knowledge of SEC battles. So, as
we do with all of our mock draft specials, we decided to pick our guest's brain before embarking on another eight-round mini draft. And Mr. Hurcomb had all the
answers to our pressing questions regarding the Southeastern Conference.

We began with the running back situation at Alabama, and Michael gave his thoughts
on Mark Ingram's hopes of rising to the position of go-to back in Tuscaloosa. From
there we covered Ryan Mallett's fantasy prospects, Georgia in the post-Knowshon era
and what we can really expect from Kentucky's Randall Cobb.
Of course what would a fantasy discussion be without a few words about Gus Malzahn?
And after a little chat on the new Auburn offense we discussed two other programs
looking at a new start, Dan Mullen's Mississippi State Bulldogs and Lane Kiffin's
Tennessee Volunteers. For answers to these questions and more, be sure to click on the audio link above. And then it was time to get down to it.
During my SEC draft prep it became clear that there would be significant early drop offs
at quarterback and tight end, making it imperative to nab a solid starter from those
positions early. And Michael made the easy choice by staying true to his school
and grabbing Tim Tebow. Certain Alex would select a quarterback if I let one slide
I had no choice but to nab the ever-improving Jevan Snead. Feeling he could get the same value at quarterback at the end as he would at this point of the draft Alex
grabbed his boy, Mark Ingram, thus beginning a run on the tailbacks. Jim plucked
Charles Scott and we were on our way.
Prior to the draft we made the decision to ditch the kickers and require each roster to
field a true freshman. And it was the CFFInsider.com's recruiting expert, Alex, that
jumped first, nabbing one of his chosen ones for 2009, South Carolina's Jarvis Giles,
in round two. Jim then followed with Florida freshman wide receiver Andre Debose
in round three. Convinced we'll be looking at a different Auburn offense in 2009
I spent my freshman flyer on Auburn incoming wide receiver DeAngelo Benton. And
Michael waited until the end of the draft to pick up the highly-regarded Bryce Brown,
a back with the
potential to explode immediately.
After the smoke had cleared it was apparent that each drafter had his quasi-sleeper
for whom he was willing to reach. Confident in his ability to bounce back from his
knee injury I made Kentucky's Derrick Locke my first running back. Alex believes Deonte Thompson will be the Florida receiver to emerge this season. Jim is drinking
the Mario Fannin Kool-Aid, and Michael is confident Caleb King will make good on
his immense talent and promise.
Of course the beauty of the mock draft is the belief held by all participants that
they just took candy from a bunch of babies. And certainly I feel that when all
is said and done this November it'll be clear that I was the true SEC guru on this
May evening, with evidence provided by the final results below.
