Another Thursday, and another mock draft. One might think the days are getting shorter and we’re nearing the kickoff to the college football season; alas, we’re not even to the month of June. Can you tell how much we love college gridiron action? For this week’s Pac-10 show we were pleased to welcome Anthony Gimino, Senior Editor for all national and regional editions of Lindy’s College Football Preview Magazine. And it’s fitting that we had Mr. Gimino on just as summer descends upon us, as the release of Lindy’s College Football Preview has traditionally given notice that it’s acceptable to begin discussing college football without feeling the need for professional assistance.

As usual we kicked the show off with pressing questions from around the conference. It’s during this Q & A where we pan for gold nuggets of information that will make us sound much smarter down the road. We asked Mr. Gimino his thoughts on what we could expect at Oregon and Oregon State, specifically the inexperience of both teams’ offensive lines and the health of OSU’s Lyle Moeavo. We solicited our expert’s thoughts on what we’ll see from Steve Sarkisian’s Washington Huskies. We were provided some deep thoughts on the Stanford quarterback battle and the quest for carries at Arizona. And like kids who copy their friends’ math homework in the hallway before the bell rings we wrapped up our discussion feeling confident we were ready to begin our mock draft. You can be the judge of how fared on the test.
The drafting pool wasn’t quite Big East bad, but it certainly wasn’t the Pac-10 that we’ve become accustomed to in recent years. It’s clear the conference is in a fantasy transition stage. In fact we’re wondering where all the Pac-10 quarterbacking stars have gone. Forget Matt Leinart, where are you Drew Olson? How about Alex Brink? And didn’t this conference used to house enough quality tight ends to furnish an entire BCS league of fantasy rosters? Clearly the 2009 Pac-10 is lacking in known commodities at many of the conference’s traditional locales, but this may just mean that starring roles are there for the taking, and we’ll feel a little differently come the season’s conclusion.
Anthony led us off with our top back (regardless of league), LeGarrette Blount. Certain that a top back would come back around to me I felt confident taking the clear #1 tight end, Rob Gronkowksi. Then by the time Alex nabbed Jahvid Best and Jim doubled his running back pleasure with Jacquizz Rodgers and Toby Gerhart my tailback dreams had been shattered. Suddenly struck with the vision of a fantasy squad led by Kevin Riley I nabbed Jeremiah Masoli and hoped to get lucky in the running back sweepstakes down the road. Anthony concluded round two with James Rodgers and we were on our way.
The rest of the draft saw no huge surprises. Anthony’s ability to team Nicolas Grigsby with LeGarrette Blount may prove too much for the rest of us to overcome. Certainly Jim’s RB duo will prove a worthy challenge, but Alex’s tandem of Jahvid Best and Arthur Burns and my duo of Stafon Johnson and Chris Polk certainly leave a great deal to be desired. As our loyal listeners/readers know we require each drafter to select a true freshman/JUCO player among his eight selections. Alex took the aforementioned Washington State running back Burns, I nabbed Oregon JUCO Tyrece Gaines, Jim went for super prospect Matt Barkley while Anthony cast his lot with UCLA top WR recruit Randall Carroll.
As I look at each team objectively I’m quite certain that the squad built by Mr. Belanger is a small step ahead of Mr. Gimino’s, though a breakout season from Stanford’s Andrew Luck will put our guest drafter over the top. Alex has one question at running back, while I’m quite certain I’ll need the stars to align in order to see consistent running back production. Of course as we all know, college fantasy football can be a little unpredictable.
June is upon us, and as the release of the Lindy’s College Football Previews tells us, it’s now socially acceptable to talk a little college (fantasy) football. Here is a look at the final rosters.
