I am looking at two pac 10 QB's...Aaron Corp and J Masoli. I start 2 in my league every week. I want to take Barkley and Darren Thomas as backups, will they REDSHIRT this year???  - Tom /Las Vegas 07/03/2009
Darron Thomas has little chance to redshirt with Roper and Harper transferring.

Barkley is special situation. He's clearly ahead of Mustain on the depth chart, but personally I don't see USC burning his redshirt in just mop up duty. If Corp stays healthy, I think they will at least try to redshirt him. Of course all the experts I've talked to don't agree with me...so take it for what it is worth.

Who are some young sleepers you would suggest picking up at the end of a draft in a keeper league? Guys who may not contribute this year but are a year away from breaking out or set to step in and make some noise.  - Willie in the 313 07/01/2009
what's up Willie? I could throw out quiet a few names to you, but the best way to get a look at all the names would be to click on the draft kit and sort by position for freshman. There are at least 10 good keeper candidates at each position; they are usually marked with a keeper or sleeper tier.

If you come up with a few names from the group that you'd like to discuss, we'd be happy to do it!

UPDATE: We've created a quick Keeper & Sleeper page. It is crude, but we'll style it later and fill in more keepers/sleepers as we go.
Jim in the 248

I have the first pick in my 16-team league that allowed you to keep two players from last year's roster. I don't have any Rbs, and kept Austin Davis as my qb. It looks like both Taylor Potts and Zac Robinson are available, while so are RBs Miquale Lewis and Bryce Beall. Are the Qbs to good to pass up, or do I go for a RB?  - Mark/Las Vegas 06/30/2009
Hi Mark. I think it comes down to a question of Potts or Beall at the first pick. I could make an argument for both. It is a rare opportunity to get your paws on the Texas Tech QB, so it almost seems like that should be a college fantasy football commandment: Thou shalt draft Texas Tech QBs. There is a small but real chance that Potts doesn't end up with the job this year, but I'd grab him both to bolster the most important spot on your roster and to deny him to your opponents.Jim

It's Mike Hartline at Kentucky. Brian Hartline is his brother who played WR at Ohio State last year. re: your latest update on incoming QB's at Kentucky  - Brent 06/30/2009
Good catch....updatedAlex

Hey guys. Thanks again for all the help. Is there any way you could add a "last updated xx/xx/xx" to reflect when you last updated the draft kit and/or player rankings?  - Will 06/29/2009
Thx Will...we've thought about how to do that. The problem is we update our ranking almost daily based on news that comes in. A player here...a player there. Anytime there is a major ranking change, we note it in article on the front and reset the up/down arrows.Alex

Any concern about Ryan Mallett not starting?

Im in a 30 team league, and have Tyler Sheehan at QB right now. I really like Malletts week 9 matchup w/Eastern Michigan, and can probably flip a coin a few other weeks b/t these two...but only if Mallett starts! If I dont go w/Mallett, what do y'all think? I like Omar Clayton, but week 9 Id have to use him at TCU...
 - Chris, Richmond 06/28/2009
Chris,

I have no concern about Mallett not starting. He's going to be the guy. He was wildly inconsistent at Michigan...but as a true frosh thrown into the fire. And Bobby Petrino has not had the fortune of working with such a talented guy at the college level.

Barring injuries, Mallett will be the man in Fayetteville.
Brian

Who are the best keeper league prospects at QB??  - Mike / College Station 06/28/2009
Obviously any of the top ranked true freshman. We've tagged a few in the draft kit. Click on 'tier' in the draft kit and they will come to the top. We'll get a page up to better sort through them.

One guy that should be stepping into a good system next year is Landry Jones at Oklahoma.

UPDATE: Add Brantly to that list...he slipped my mind.
Alex

I'm in a keeper league and need to decide between keeping Eugene Jarvis and Toby Gerhart. My inclination was to go with Jarvis, and I saw that you have Jarvis ranked higher than Gerhart. So, is there any reason to consider keeping Gerhart over Jarvis?  - Will 06/27/2009
Hey Will, how have you been? In our long-promised and, trust me, soon to be released projections, we have these guys pretty much neck and neck for the year. My gut says to go with Toby Gerhart for what it's worth, even with his significantly tougher schedule. I've got some qualms about Jarvis: a fairly tough non-conference schedule, working without Julian Edelman at quarterback, and his history of injuries. I think Gehart is a safer play.Jim

In my sophomore's only league, I'm probably going to be looking at Rodgers and Beall. I see you basically have them rated about the same, but you do seem to give Rodgers the edge.

I know you'll tell me to go with my gut (Beall) but I just wondered what the reason was for giving Rodgers the edge.
 - T.I. / E.L. 06/25/2009
When the final rankings/projections are done (next week) Beall will jump Quizz. Especially in PPR leagues.

It's actually not even going to be close.
Alex

Vandy's D will statistically be better than LSU's this year? Seriously? Puppies are having their drafts already and you guys still think that's the case? Help me out here.  - J-Bird / Nashville 06/25/2009
Well one team returns their entire front seven and the other doesn't. One team held opponents under 20 ppg last year and the other didn't. One team averaged over 2 sacks and 2 turnovers per game and the other team didn't.

That said, we've given LSU a bump in the turnover department, decreased their pass yds and pts against because of Chavis' arrival...even though based on other the variables (returning starter & chg in schedule) it is probably not warranted.

Proj stat and fantasy pt wise they they are nearly identical. And both listed as D3's, so you're splitting hairs on the number in front of their name.

I wouldn't consider either a week in and week out starter. At least not for my roster. But both have some nice opportunities to fill-in gaps.

Here is the write-up for both that will go out on Sunday:

Vandy: Despite the loss of CB D.J. Moore to the NFL, Vanderbilt’s defense returns largely intact. Including three 100-plus tacklers in LB Patrick Benoist (109), LB Chris Marve (105) and S Ryan Hamilton (104). This is good news for a team that quietly lays the wood to opposing offenses. The Commodores yielded fewer than 20 points per game as well as registering over two turnovers and two sacks per game in 2009, making them a sleeper defense that you can use to fill in the holes in your schedule. Take a long look at the Oct. 10 date against Army.

LSU: The defensive line is a concern after losing DE Tyson Jackson and DT Ricky Jean-Francois to the NFL. They also must replace DE Kirston Pittman and DT Marlon Favorite. All were in the starting rotation at some point during the season. The Tigers certainly have bodies they can plug in, but rebuilding the front line is never an easy thing. The Tigers will need to rely on a strong group of linebackers that will add former starting SS Harry Colemen (71 tackles) to the mix. On the bright side the Tigers welcome in defensive coordinator John Chavis, a respected coach who spent the last 14 seasons as the Vols defensive coordinator. Chavis' aggressive Tennessee defenses have consistently ranked amongst the best in the SEC. The question is how quickly can he turn around the LSU defense that took a significant tumble in 2008? LSU might not be ready for full-time fantasy duty, but they have enough elements to make them a defense to watch.

I'm obv not going to convince you not to draft LSU...nor do I want to. Your not going to agree with everything we write/rank (at least I hope not). If you feel strongly about Chavis getting them back to form...take 'em.

I got the first overall pick in a 10-player league. What do I do? Draft Keenum? Or try to trade picks with somebody?

Thanks guys.
 - Dan/Last Place 06/25/2009
Dan,

I love Keenum, and I've been on his bandwagon since spring of 2008...but I would look to slide down a little bit. I would try to move down and grab a McCoy and then have a better selection of running backs coming back. That being said I wouldn't curse my bad fortune if I were forced to take Keenum, but I'd much rather have, for example, #5 and #16 than #1 and #20. With #5 you could go Dez Bryant, Colt McCoy or Kendall Hunter and then still get a DeMarco Murray coming back around at #15. If you stay with #1 you'll have Keenum, but you may have to take more of a question mark at #20, say a Michael Smith.

Alex and Jim should chime in as well. Dan, more than anything we want you to know that we care about you, and we don't want you to spend another season in last place.

Jim: I like sticking with the first pick and grabbing the best player out there. Keenum looks good at this point. In a 10-team all-FBS league, you should have good players available at #20 and 21 as well.

No one in Lincoln uses puppies...Bagger Daddy?? What is that?  - Lance/Lincoln 06/25/2009
Thanks for the info Lance. Clearly these are not regional colloquialisms here. Instead we've got a hipster in David City hanging with his Bagger Daddy. And I've never met either fella. Brian

First off what is up with Bryan from NE calling you puppies??? Confused by that. My question is who ends up being the #2 and #3 WR's for Texas? Thanks!  - Kyle Rhinken, Nashville TN 06/25/2009
I took the "puppies" as a Nebraska thing. Some people say "Hey man, you're a cool/rad/bitchin cat" but in the Lincoln area, they use puppies. All good. Now, Kyle, on to your query. In our upcoming rankings we see Malcolm Williams as the #2 and Brandon Collins as the #3, with each playing a definite supporting role to Mr. Shipley.
Brian

Hey guys love the site! You puppies do a fantastic job! Me and my buddy Bagger Daddy have a bet on the following over/unders, loser has to trim the others bush all summer. What is your opinions...

Jimmy Clausen total TD's 32.5

Montario Hardesty rushing yards 790

Daryl Clark total TD's 28.5

L.Blount rushing yards 1400

thanks!

 - Bryan Hein, David City NE 06/24/2009
What's up Bryan. I'll be the first one to jump in here, though I'd like to hear the other fellas' opinions. I'm assuming you are not including bowl games.
Jim:
JC Under
MH Over
DC Under
LB Over

-----I agree with Jim on all but Hardesty. I see about 660 rushing yards from him. -Brian
Jim

Ha guys love your site...Got 2 questions...what kind of an impact do think Cierre Wood of Notre Dame?? And I follow N Dame recruiting pretty close, any chance we can land super/mega recruit Travis "Tick" Besky at QB next year?  - Tyson Omaha NE 06/23/2009
Well, Wood has a legit shot at significant playing time. We've got him 2nd on our internal ND depth chart. If all goes as planned, I'm guessing he sees just under 100 carries as a true frosh. Allen is going to be the starter though.

The Tick will be yours...write it in stone.
Alex Lemming

Just curious if/when you plan on updating the 2009 Draft Kit.

Thanks!
 - Otis/Alabama 06/23/2009
First, thanks for everyone's patience. We've had a lot of inquires on when our projections (and re-rank) will be done. Projections for all-120 teams and all players is a grueling process.

The D projections and ranks are done. They will be posted this week.

We are getting closer on the O projections and they will be released next week.
Alex

Add Lippincott into that discussion as well...  - Chris, Richmond 06/23/2009
Hmmmmm...if you want to swing for the fences take Lippincott. Otherwise, see below.

I'm a gambler and would probably go with Lippincott...but it would depend on the other RBs on the roster.
Alex

30 team league - good times! Ive got Ingram and Sharp as my 2 RBs, and want a 3rd to play at flex...

Jaycen Taylor or Montario Hardesty?
 - Chris, Richmond 06/23/2009
Yikes. Those are two solid RB pickups in a 30-team league.

Taylor is still a bit of a risk with the knee...Hardesty.
Alex

Alex,
Thanks for all the help so far. If you had the entire Hawaii WR corps to pick from who would it be?
 - John, FL 06/23/2009
Going with the guys out wide. Lane or Bradley.Alex

Hey guys, love the site! Quick question, I am in a all Big 12 league and I have to decide on Ryan Broyles or Kerry Meier. And then between Roy Helu or Darrell Scott. Who would you guys choose?
Thanks!

signed the only female CFFB player alive, Barb
 - Barb Busch, David City Nebraska 06/22/2009
PPR leauge? Meier. Otherwise I would go with Broyles. After cranking out our projections for these two, they are closer than I would of thought though. We'll be posting our projections soon.

I would take Helu...but it has become clear that I'm biased against Scott. Brian/Jim would prob advise on Scott.
Alex

im in a 10 person league and i was wondering whats the starting lineup made up of on offense and when im drafting how many players of each position do i need on my roster and how many players all together on my roster  - john murphy/dallas 06/22/2009
Not sure I'm following you Murph....but most leagues are: 1 QB, 2 RB, 2 WR, 1 TE, 1 K & 1 D

From there a good rule of thumb for your roster would be; 3 QBs, 5 RBs, 5 RBs, 2 TE, 2 K & 2 D
Alex

Looking for a backup QB who could be a spot starter. Who do you like of the following -

Arnaud (Iowa St.)
Taylor (VT)
Jarrett Brown (WVU)
Andrew Luck (St)
Forcier (UM)

 - Sam / College Park 06/22/2009
Well it depends on who your main starter is? Is this a keeper league?

If this is not a keeper league, I would eliminate Forcier. The rest are going to project out about the same, so it comes down to schedule matching.
Alex

12 team league and BCS only...8 player keeper league just got done drafting the FA/Freshman draft and here is my team. Just took this team over before the draft. Starting 2QB's, 2 RB's, 3WR/TE, 1 K & 1 DEF

Standard scoring but passing TD's only get 3 points all other TD's get 6 points.

QB's Todd Reesing, Adam Weber, Kyle Parker.
RB Jarvis Giles, Mikell Simpson, Montario Hardesty, Jermaine Thomas
Jamie Harper, Richard Samuel
WR/TE Randall Cobb, Julio Jones, Deonte Thompson, Darius Darks,
Marvin Jones.
K Joshua Shene
DEF Penn St.

I can actually start Cobb at either WR/TE or QB which is why I drafted him.
 - Craig/WI 06/22/2009
QB looks pretty good with Reesing. WR, looks good. I like Cobb...Bri and think Cobb will be running the QB spot again before it is all said and done so if you good be in for some bonus points. D looks good, especially early on...just keep an eye on them when the B10 season starts. A kicker is a kicker.

My only concern is at RB. Some things need to fall in place here. Everyone has upside..but with upside comes downside. I'd like to see 1 or 2 proven commodities in this group.

Based on a number of rosters I've seen...it looks like I'm gonna be on the hook with Giles. I'm still high on him, but I'm worried about people expecting him to be a producer right out of the gate...it's a gamble.
Alex

Playing in a keeper league, we get to keep 7 guys and if we want to keep more we forfeit draft picks on a first round by second round and so forth basis. I have:
Jacquizz Rogers
Sam Bradford
Jermaine Gresham
Toby Gerhart
LeGarrette Blount
Mardy Gilyard
Michael Smith
Todd Resing
Charles Scott
Damian Williams
Jake Sharp
DeVeir Posey

Other than the no-brainers Bradford, Blount and Quizz, what should I do?
 - Bill/Pittsburgh 06/21/2009
Hey Bill,

Seven keepers is very nice. And I really like your start. How many guys are in your league...3? :)

Agree on your locks. Then you've got to keep Gresham (4). He and Gronk are so far ahead of the rest then you've got no choice. #5 should be Gilyard (5). I LOVE the CINCY offense this year, and I love Gilyard. Now I'm uncertain of how your starting lineup works, but I'd like to have some insurance for Rodgers at tailback. With the potentially flaky Blount you'll want to nab a sure thing, and Charles Scott (6) is a pretty sure thing. He moves chains, scores touchdowns and doesn't fumble. The last one is harder. Toss Posey out immediately. Throw Williams out too (QB questions, ROJO and rest of talent to steal scores). Now it becomes a question of Gerhart, Smith, Reesing and Sharp. And in my mind it's a pick between the Kansas boys. Personally I like Sharp to become one of the nation's better goal line vultures. Bradford's bye comes when Kansas is playing Southern Miss, and while Reesing should put up decent numbers in that one it's not like he'll be playing Rice. Others may disagree but I think you can get a more explosive QB for Bradford's bye...maybe Robert Griffin and his tasty matchup with NW State in Week 4? So...I'm telling to go Sharp and absolutely load up on backs. Two explosive high-ceiling backs in Quizz and Blount. And two workhorses in Scott and Sharp. Sprinkle in Bradford, Gresham and Gilyard and you've got one hell of a team to start the draft.
Brian

I have WR's Julio Jones, Randall Cobb, Deonte Thompson, Marvin Jones & Mark Dell and we start 3 WR's. Would you drop Dell for one of these WR's. D'Andre Goodwin, Darius Darks, Jock Sanders, Shay Hodge, Jonathan Baldwin.

This is a 9 player keeper league
Thanks
 - 06/21/2009
I would dump Dell for Darks or Hodge. Thanks to Sanders' question marks entering the season he's out. Baldwin is the most talented of the bunch...but he was Wannstedt and Bill Stull. Goodwin is a Husky. Brian

Who's the most valuable QB in a limited keeper out of Robert Griffin, Terrelle Pryor, and Zac Robinson? I have a late pick in a serpentine draft, and might shoot for a second QB with the early first or late second, but I need to figure out which one I shouldn't release back to the draft.  - Chris/Maine 06/20/2009
As recently as two years ago the thought of keeping a Baylor quarterback was laughable. Robert Griffin is the one. Brian

First, let me say thanks to you for having all of this info on one site. Your advise took me to the champ game last year and I know you'll get me back there again this year!!!

My question is this: my league made 2 changes this year. We went to a keeper format where you keep the player for the round drafted, FA's = 18th round. And we went from a mostly BCS league to no limits.

With that said, I landed the 1.1 in a 12 man PPR league. I narrowed my choices down and I'd like your opinon as which player to keep. Our draft is next month.
QB, 2RB, 2WR, RB/WR, TE, DST

Tebow = 1.1
DeMarco Murray = 2.12
Emanuel Sanders = 3.1
Detron Lewis = 7.1
Brandon Banks = 18.12
Mark Ingram = 18.12
Jeremiah Masoli = 18.12
Tim Hiller = 18.12

I see no reason to "keep" Tebow and lose the 1.1. Your thoughts?

Speaking of the 1.1, I need help but I can not go into details here as too many of my league mates read this site. Could I email you my thoughts privately? If so, leave an addy.

Thanks in advance.
 - ronnie/Alabama 06/19/2009
We should probably figure out who did the advising and stick with that guy! Nice work.

I would keep them all at those values. Who else are you going to get that is better than Tebow with the first pick? Shoot me an email at alex @ cffinsider. No spaces.
Alex

I really liked your piece on Turnovers Brian. Everything you said made "simple sense."

I also liked your pick of SMU. I too think they are in for an extremely better year with June Jones striving for more efficiency out of his offense.

What do you think about Southern Miss.? Will they make huge improvements offensively, since they have Davis, Fletcher, and Brown back?

One last thing, is Kendrick Hardy worth a keeper league selection late in a draft (12 team league)?

 - Jacob/KC 06/18/2009
Thanks Jacob. I'm glad when something I write makes sense...

I think that Southern Miss will indeed make huge strides, but 2009's progress may have more to do with the absence of Fletcher and Brown this spring. Guys like V.J. Floyd had a nice spring, and Austin Davis was able to see other WR targets step up. So when the big boys, Fletcher and Brown, do return this fall, we'll have a better, more well-rounded offense. And I don't think we can overestimate what DeAndre Brown is going to mean to the Southern Miss, both now and in the future. Recruits like Brown change programs, and they draw guys like Kendrick Hardy to Hattiesburg. Hardy is definitely worth a late-round keeper shot. Everything I'm hearing has Hardy as the replacement for Fletcher.
Brian

Hey guys....great site! Just curious when you plan on updating your QB/RB/WR ranking next.

Thanks
 - Mike/Wisconsin 06/17/2009
We are about 75% through our 2009 projections...which (knock on wood) should be released late next week.

This will obviously result in some rankings shifts as well.
Alex

Any predictions on what will happen to J Berry of Ohio st? I took him in the 12th rd...hoping for a first offense slap on the rist  - Tyson Omaha 06/13/2009
First it is up to the courts. If he is tried and convicted of a felony...it is lights out for Berry at OSU. If reduced to a misdemeanor, I suspect he will be back...but put on a tight leash.

We'll have to pay close attention to the pre-trial dates and hearings to see which way this is going to go.

Here is another man's opinion on the topic
Alex

I'm in a 12 person keeper league. Have a solid returning squad with a real chance to make a run for the title and need to draft an impact WR. Assuming both Shipley and Broyles are on the board, what would you recommend? Get Shipley's services for a year or go with the younger Broyles? Do you see a significant difference between the two? Thanks in advance for the advice!

 - Dave in DC 06/12/2009
If you are going for a championship, play for today and draft Shipley. As long as he stays healthy...which has been a problem for him...he should out perform Broyles.

On a related note, in keeper leagues the only thing I do differently than regular leagues is load up on redshirt / true freshman. I'll take 3 or 4 sleepers hoping 1 or 2 pan out down the road. Otherwise, when I'm drafting my core starters, I pay no attention to year class.
Alex

Hey guys, another question. In my Auction league this year, we will be using a not so common roster format of 1 QB, 1 RB, 1 WR, 1 TE, 1 K, and 1 Def (4 Reserves). Anyways, due to that type of roster format, what position should be priced higher, QBs or RBs?

Note: We use the same scoring system as this site uses for its player rankings.

Thanks!
 - Jeremy/Wenatchee 06/11/2009
Great question and my answer might surprise you.

Based on this year's talent pool I would say QB, WR, TE, RB, D and then K. I put WR and even TE in front the RB because there are bigger drop offs in point production at those positions than at RB. And there are really no distigushable RBs this year. So I would try to get a top tier QB (Kennum, Tebow, McCoy, Bradford, Kaepernick...maybe LeFevour), WR (Bryant and maybe Briscoe) and TE (Gresham and Gronkowski) before taking a RB.

On a related note, you just inspired me to dust off an old piece on value drafting and freshen it up for 2009.
Alex

One last question on my WR's I have Julio Jones, Randall Cobb, Deonte Thompson & Mark Dell and we start 3 WR's. Would you drop Dell for one of these WR's. Edward Britton, D'Andre Goodwin, Marvin Jones, Darius Darks or Jamar Howard.
Thanks
 - Craig/WI 06/10/2009
Craig,

Dump Dell for Britton and don't look back.
Brian

Keeper league:

RB Edwin Baker Michigan St.

or

RB Duane Bennett Minnesota ?

Thanks!
 - Scotty 2 Hotty / Huntsville, AL 06/09/2009
Well you know I'm going to with Baker ;). Both are a bit risky coming off injury. Baker is even more risky because he is unproven at this level. If you are concerned about immediate production and minimizing risk, you take Bennett. If you are looking for someone that has long term upside you take Baker. You have to assume the greater risk though. Which ever way you go, fill your starters before taking either.Spartan Al

Since Crawford is in trouble and A Quigley according to Phil Steele will play linebacker for the hawks, who is the front runner to backup Sharp at Kansas? Thanks guys  - Tyson Omaha 06/08/2009
Hey Tyson,

Slim pickings buddy. All hope isn't lost on Crawford, as there's still a chance. IF he doesn't return then I may be willing to take a flyer on young Deshaun Sands, as he would present much greater breakaway potential at the tailback spot. Remember, there are O-line concerns in Lawrence.
Brian

My Starting RB's will be Jarvis Giles & Mike Simpson. After our draft we can cut players make picks so would you cut any of these RB's Jamie Harper, Richard Samuel, Josh, Adams or Ryan Williams for Onterrio McCalebb, Carlton Thomas, Jermaine Thomas, Anothony Allen, Edwin Baker, Montario Hardesty, Cierre Wood, or Chris Whaley. We can only have a max of 6 RB's so I can not cut anyone else to pickup a RB.
Thanks
 - Craig/WI 06/07/2009
I'm high on Jarvis as everyone knows...but you need a backup plan if he doesn't start. Hardesty and J. Thomas look like solid bets this year and I would grab one or both. Baker and Whaley are two wildcards...which you already have in Jarvis so I wouldn't go that route.

I like Harper, he could surprise this year. Samuel is a decent gamble as well. Ryan Williams will play 2nd fiddle all year and Josh Adams and the Wake RB rotation don't do much for me...I would ditch those two for Hardesty and J. Thomas.
Alex

Hello again gang, Need a second opinion on something. I'm currently setting up the price tags for each player in our WAC/MAC only league(Auction Style). I'm having a tough time deciding who should be priced higher, Colin Kaepernick or Dan LeFevour. What do you guys think?  - Jeremy / Wenatchee 06/07/2009
Hi Jeremy. While both should have very good years, I would give Kaepernick the edge (higher price) based on the schedule. His toughest games are probably the first and the last (at ND, at Boise State). LeFevour has to go on the road to Arizona and Michigan State in the first two weeks with a later game against BC.Jim

I call this site my fantasy home for soon to be mainstream college fantasy football. My question is now that USC has a new offensive coordinator will they utilize there offensive playmakers better? I took Joe mcknight in the 5th round and thought I stole him. He is one of the most talented players in college football. When chow was there both Bush and L White put up monster numbers. Why can't Mcknight and S Johnson do it? Speaking of which, is Stafon Johnson got knee issues? Thanks guys!!  - Tyson Omaha NE 06/07/2009
Thank you very much Tyson! It's so fun, it has to be mainstream soon, right? I'm not ready to criticize the USC coaching staffs of the past, they have a pretty good record. I'm guessing it will be more of the same from the coaching standpoint, they've got one guy who was Sarkisian's assistant and the other was with the offense a few years earlier. There is potential for a thinning in the crowded backfield though and Johnson and McKnight are the likeliest beneficiaries. I prefer Johnson because of the goal line opportunites. If you are in a yardage league, McKnight is a solid play. I'm not going to say he's a sure-thing, but I think the upside is there and we'll find out real soon if you did indeed get a 5th round steal.Jim

Ha guys...love your site. First off I'm in a 12 player league using select 28 BCS schools...good teams. I took M Hardesty in the 3rd round after my picks of Quiz Rodgers and J masoli...huge breakout I think for the Oregon gunman. I think M Hardesty when healthy is a stud. I think under Kiffan he will have a big year and he's a sleeper...your thoughts please? Thanks  - Tyson Omaha NE 06/06/2009
Tyson, I'm with you on Hardesty. He is one of my sleepers for this year. I think he has the talent to make a big impact. My only concern would be that we don't really know how Kiffin is going to use his RBs. Will he get the carries? If he gets 15 carries a game, then you will be rewarded. I think Rodgers will have a little bit rougher time this year than last, still a great pick. I'm high on Masoli as well, all in all a great start to the draft for a 28 team league, but maybe you could have gotten Hardesty a round or two later?Jim

What are your predictions for Chris Burns, RB, Pitt and Blaine Gabbert, QB, Mizzou for next season? Are either slotted to take over the workload for McCoy and Daniels?  - Will (Milwaukee) 06/05/2009
We are finishing up the long and grueling process of player stat projections. You'll see these rolled out pretty soon.

In the meantime...Burns will be involved, but Dion Lewis seems to have a slight edge right now. I don't see any reason to take a gamble on a Pitt running back unless one clearly distinguishes themselves in fall camp. This looks like split carries.

Gabbert is the clear starter at Mizzou. It is highly unlikely he'll match the numbers Daniel has put up the last two years...especially when they lose two WRs that combined for 174 catches in 2008.

Unless your projecting long term for a keeper league, I wouldn't burn a draft pick on either. To many safer options.
Alex

I'm in a 16-team league that lets you keep two players each year off last year's roster. Got quite a few to choose from, not sure who to go with.

QB
Austin Davis, S. Miss

RB
Damion Fletcher, S. Miss
Jonathan Dwyer, GT
Brandon West, WMU
Charles Scott, LSU

WR
DeAndre Brown, S. Miss
Aldrick Robinson, SMU
 - Mark/Las Vegas 06/05/2009
Davis for sure...I don't even need to look at the rest to know that he is in. He has both short term and long term potential.

What else we got here....the running backs are tempting. Especially Scott, but I could find a flaw with each. So I'm sticking with Southern Miss and picking DeAndre Brown for the same reasons as Davis.

I wouldn't blame you for keeping Robinson, Dwyer or Scott though.
Alex

Looking to draft a QB with my next pick. My current QB's are Reesing & Kyle Parker but need another since we start 2QB's. This is a 10 player keeper league(BCS only).

Here are some I am looking at.

Tate Forcier, Mich
Adam Weber, Minn
Cody Hawkins, Col
Jacory Harris, Mia

Which of these do you like or are they some other lower QB's that you think might be starting this year.

Thanks
 - Craig/WI 06/04/2009
I've tried to keep my gaze averted from the Michigan QB situation, but I have to imagine that Forcier will have the best long-term value of these QBs. Weber maybe for this year. I like Jacory Harris if you can afford a slow start for the first 4-5 games. By the end of the season, I think he'll be doing well.Jim

Hello again! Just read your latest update on Jake Heaps, the QB who committed to BYU. Just wanted to note that Heaps will likely have to go on his Mormon mission before he plays at BYU. Giving former 4-star QB Jason Munns, who will return from his mission this upcoming year, the edge to start at BYU for at least 3 seasons. Heaps is an exceptional talent, but the math isn't working in his favor right now. Regardless of who plays, Heaps should be on hold at until 2012.  - Jeremy / Wenatchee 06/03/2009
Excellent scoop...we'll make note of it when we are doing our rankings next year.Alex

Hey gang! Question. I've read multiple times from different sources that Boise State would "like" to run the ball more next season. Due to their lack or production at RB last season its tough to see them have success with only Jeremy Avery and D.J. Harper, neither is a power RB. Is Avery a strong option at RB? Or is he a yards eater and nothing else?  - Jeremy / Wenatchee 06/02/2009
Hi Jeremy. Alex, Brian and myself were actually having a pretty in-depth discussion about the Boise State running back situation yesterday. Nothing earth shattering in predicting Avery as the top back. Harper should be second and a strong contributor. We're thinking Matt Kaiseman will have a chance to make a decent showing this year as well. (If you want a really big running back, check out about the 20 second mark of these Boise State Spring Highlights. I believe that is defensive lineman Michael Atkinson; pretty impressive, no?).

The tough thing to figure out is whether they will go back to running the ball like they have in the past. Last year they were about 50:50 run to pass. In 2007 they were about 53:47 run to pass. In 2006 they were 57:43 run to pass. In 2005 they were 58:42 run to pass and in 2004, they were almost 63:37 run to pass. So they've been steadily edging away from the running game for the last few years. With a QB that can throw for a 70% completion rate, that may not be such a bad game plan, but it felt like a completely different team last year.

To wrap it up, I don't really feel comfortable drafting any of the backs as a starter in an all-league team. Too many split carries and not enough running attempts. I don't think Avery is going to get many goal line carries and Boise seemed to avoid power formations when I watched them last year. I would consider taking a stab at one of the top two after I had a solid 1 and 2 at RB.
Jim

Perhaps I am over-valuing Masoli, but is he someone you are thinking about moving up in your rankings, or is he really a QB3 in your mind?  - T.I. / E.L. 06/01/2009
Obv he had a good end to the season. The question is...are those numbers sustainable? IMO a QB2 has to get at least 3 TDs a week without having to worry about. I don't put Masoli in that category. He will have weeks where he only gets 1 or 2. Oregon is still going to pound the football on the ground and they have questions at WR and OL...see our O-line piece last week.

But if you feel strongly about putting him in that 3 TD a week category, by all means do so. He's on the cusp of being one of those guys. Always trust your gut over someone else's opinion.

Keep in mind too that a QB2 (second QB starter) has a bit different meaning depending on what type of league you are in. If you only have to start 1 QB, it is less of a risk to take a shot at Masoli...especially if his schedule matches up well with your starter. If your league has to start 2 QBs...I personally wouldn't be comfortable starting him week in and week out.
Alex

Hey guys, just want to say first off that the site is great and whomever has created it and now maintains it does a great job.

I just have one suggestion to add to the site, and it wouldn't be difficult in comparison with some of the other stuff you guys have set up. I would love to see a comments section available at the end of the articles that are posted. This would allow your readers the opportunity to weigh in and debate on the different angles you guys present.

Keep up the awesome work!
 - Jayson / Mount Pleasant SC 06/01/2009
Thanks Jayson. It is a collective effort by Jim, Brian and I. We added a 4th in the offseason that we'll introduce later. And there are those that send us info regularly...they deserve credit as well.

But mostly it is guys like you that read everyday and provide feedback that keeps us going and helps improve the site. We'll be testing out some improvements over the next few months and I'll put this on the list of suggestions. Thanks!
Alex

GREAT write-up on who will replace Crabtree!

Matt Asiata
Bryce Beal
Charles Clay
Jewel Hampton
Jahvid Best
Ryan Broyles
Damaris Johnson
Marty Gilyard
Kerry Meier

 - Jacob/KC 05/31/2009
Thanks boss. It was doozie that I started back in the spring. Hopefully you'll enjoy Wednesday's edition as well.

We are finalizing our projections right now which will better help answer this question in about a week. But off the top of my head...

1a) Best...health always a concern
1b) Beal
3) Clay...large man crush
4) Hampton...keeper aspects
5a) Gilyard
5b) Meier...lots of PPR points
6) Asiata
7) Johnson...split catches
8) Shelley

Alex,

I play in a league very similar to Tony's from Houston. In fact I'll probably face him at least once this year. My keepers are:

QB Greg Alexander, Hawaii
QB Matt Grothe, USF
RB Mark Ingram, AL
RB Graig Cooper, The U
WR Dexter McCluster, Ole Miss
WR Scott Long, Louis
WR Trae Johnson, Tulsa

If it seems like there's not much meat there, its because of heavy losses (Harrell, McCoy, & Harvin to name a few). Where do I begin this year? Tony's list from May 20th is pretty close to who I was looking at.

After the first round or two I think I'm going to have to pick some homerun sleepers, any ideas? Oh yeah, no add/drops through the season. We've got to "love the ones were with."

Thanks!
 - John//Florida 05/29/2009
Homerun sleepers...no problem ;). If your league is loaded with Flex spots and can start a 2nd QB, here is where I think you are at...

Finding RBs and a 2nd QB (if they start) are the top priorities. I'd start at RB in the draft. If you can start 3 flex RBs, I would probably burn the next two picks at RB. I'm going to assume the top dogs are going to be gone so picking through my favs of the next level guys your probably looking at are: Asiata (we are very high on), Minor, Daniel Porter (I'm very high on), Batch (high risk...but all 3 staffers are high on), Mathews (he's worth a shot), Dixon, etc. I love Giles, but in a keeper league he's going to have a high price tag.

On the QB front...I'm strong on Alexander this year...maybe my faith is misplaced, but I think you have a solid starter in Alexander. Either way your stuck with him, so don't second guess it. You have to draft with the assumption that he will be solid. Grothe is a good bye week filler. But I'd like to see a Corp or Mallett in there. Since this is a keeper league they they are a bonus because they serve two purposes. However, if someone like Reesing, Snead or A. Davis are staring me in the face in the 1st/2nd round you might want to jump. But don't panic if the value isn't there.

If you only have to start 1 WR, McCluster is your guy and you can take some shots downfield later in the draft, which I'll be covering next week. But guys like Damian Williams and D'Andre Goodwin should be available later in the draft that you can get at a value.

Love the pickup rules BTW...we have a 2 pickup max in our league. And they are trade-able...which makes for some great trade action in week 10.
Alex

I drafted Giles. So do you think I should stay with RB or go WR in the 2nd round. DEF's seem to be going since ALB just went.

The RB's I would be looking at at Mikell Simpson, Jewel Hampton, Jermaine Thomas or Anthony Dixon.

WR's Lyle Leong, Adron Tennell, Randall Cobb

Or do I go with Aaron Corp since we do start 2 QB's in this league.

Thanks
 - Craig/WI 05/27/2009
Hi Craig. Hate to jump in the middle here, but I will. It sounds like defenses are important in your league!

I'm thinking Corp as a keeper prospect. He doesn't have the job for sure though, so it is a risk. If he does get the job, you've got three years of him getting you 3 TDs per game. That's what USC QBs do. So he would be your consistent scoring quarterback, while Reesing will probably have more big games.

I would still go RB over WR at this point, you need one more stud RB.... I prefer Dixon for this year, but Hampton is probably the top keeper prospect of the group in my mind.

So I'm ok with Corp for the future or the RB pick.
Jim

See above  - Craig/WI 05/27/2009
I'll agree with JB above. Corp or Hampton would be my picks. Corp probably makes more sense in a 2 QB league, but I would probably be too tempted by the Jewel to pass.

Regarding the D, if the big guys are gone, don't reach for table scraps...just wait.
Alex

Nice write up on PAving the Way. Good analysis. What about non BCS schools?  - DJ Texas 05/27/2009
I'll pass the word to the Ask the Insider deadbeat Brian. We have few non-BCS guys listed....Porter, Mosure and Lewis. Everson's piece also has a tab for all the non-BCS schools.Alex

Dynasty/keeper league start 2 QB's, 2 RB's, 3 WR's/TE, 1 K, & 1 Def

All DEF's were thrown back into the draft pool.
1st two picks were Texas and USC DEF's

My team
QB's T. Reesing Kan, Kyle Parker Clem
RB's J. Harper Clem, R. Samuel Ga, J. Adams WF, R. WilliamsVATC
WR's J. Jones Ala, M. Dell Mist

My question is who would you pick first, the players I am looking at and in no order.

Aaron Corp QB USC
Tate Forcier QB Mich
Brandon Minor RB Mich
Jarvis Giles RB SoCar
Mikell Simpson RB Va
M. Hardestry RB Tenn
Anthony Dixon RB MSU
Brandon Lafaell WR LSU
Lyle Leong WR Tx Tech
Adron Tennell WR Okla

This is my 1st year in this league and don't really know how the draft is going to go but as of now if looks kind of weird with 2 DEF's going in the 1st 2 picks of the draft.

Which of the above players do you like and in what order and would you go after younger players since it is a Dynasty/keeper or always the BPA
 - Craig/WI 05/25/2009
Sorry for the delay, I hope we didn't miss your pick. Corp is tempting in a dynasty league. But I always "play for today" before worrying about next year.

RB looks like your most immediate need for 2009. Minor would be my pick. Hopefully you can grab Giles, or one of the 3 WRs in the next round.

Let us know who you got if you already picked and let's look at round 2!
Alex

Keeper League pick 3 to keep
QB Taylor Potts Texas Tech
RB Miquale Lewis Ball State
RB Darren Evans Va Tech
WR Ryan Broyles Oklahoma
WR Detron Lewis Texas Tech
WR Bryan Anderson Central Michigan
 - Joe/Ohio 05/23/2009
Potts and Lewis would be the top two. I'm guessing it is the third spot that you are struggling with. I would probably lean toward Broyles over Evans...but man it is close. I'd be curious to see what you are thinking.Alex

LSU - #33 ??!!??

Vandy and two Big12 schools' D will be better than a Chevis coached LSU squad? Help me wrap my brain around this one please.
 - Jason / Nashville 05/22/2009
You caught us. I'm glad to see someone is paying attention to the other side of the ball! Besides the top 10+, the defenses are very loosely ranked right now. Unfortunatly little numbers got put in front of them, which put them an order. We should have left them in more distinct groupings until the order within those groupings could be finialized.

We are in the process of finalizing our post spring rankings for the skill positions and evaluations for the defenses. The defenses take time as there are a lot of variables that need to be factored in. They should be done and posted in the few weeks....you'll know when they are.

LSU will likely end up 4th/5th in the SEC...with Fl, Bama and Ole Miss the top 3. Likely ahead of Oklahoma based on schedule...but I'll have a hard time ranking them ahead of Texas. Obv there are 5-6 games you'll want to avoid on the Longhorns' schedule, but they will have good matchups on the other half of the schedule.

Alex

A few Keeper league questions for you guys.

1. How do you view Ryan Broyles, Jewel Hampton, and Mike Ford as keeper prospects?

2. Behind Taylor Potts who would you draft as the future for TT?

3. In your opinion(s) when will Matt Barkley see the field or will he sit until Corp is done?

4. How will Jarrett Brown do stat wise with their schedule this year?

Thanks and keep up the unbelievable site!

Jacob
 - Jacob/KC 05/22/2009
1. It depends on the league rules a bit, but Broyles and Hampton would be on my list. Ford would be a tweener. If it costs you nothing to keep him, then I would. Otherwise you should be able to re-draft him later.

2. Seth Deoge

3. That is a tough one. Corp seems to have it all locked up and he's only a Sophomore. So barring a push by Barkley in August, my guess is they will try to redshirt him and use Mustain as #2. Even if Barkley is ahead of Mustain. Now this is purely speculation, but something has to give here. I can't see a top QB, that proved this spring that he can play riding the bench for 3 years. Whoever ultimately wins the job...Corp or Barkley...the thought of transferring has to creep into the others mind.

4. We are working on our projections now. So I'll save this one for later. I like Brown, but I don't think Jim/Brian are quite as high on him.
Alex

Alex,

Thanks for the answer to my question. To follow up, we allow the following lineup each week:

QB
RB
WR
FLEX (RB or WR)
FLEX (RB or WR)
FLEX (RB or WR)
BONUS (QB, RB, or WR)
DEFENSE

Hope that helps. So, you think Griffin is the best option even though he plays for Baylor? You don't like Austin Davis or Joe Webb?

Thanks,
Tony
 - Tony/Houston 05/22/2009
We just added the tiers to our rankings on the draft kit. In the case of Griffin, Davis and Webb...I agree with our designations. Griffin and Davis solid QB2s. And Webb is a decent QB3 range. i.e. He is a back-up IMO. Just like our rankings, I would put Griffin slightly ahead. He is dynamic athlete with more upside IMO. He could turn into one of the top QBs this fall. But that comes down to a matter of personal preference.

Given those line-ups. I would switch my pick to Griffin. You are going to need to start 2 QBs. Hopefully Locker turns into a starter and Weber becomes your top backup. Detron is your WR and then you have options at the Flex spots already on your roster. You should also be able to pickup another Flex starter in the 2nd round based on the RBs/WRs listed below. I would again lean toward a WR, in case Detron doesn't pan out.
Alex

Oops.....sorry! Here's the full list of keepers:

QB - Jake Locker, Wash
QB - Adam Weber, Minn
RB - Jahvid Best, Cal
RB - Noel Devine, WV
RB - DeMarco Murray, ou
RB - Darrell Scott, Col
RB - Mikell Simpson, Va
WR - Detron Lewis, itt

Thanks!
 - Tony/Houston 05/20/2009
Much better. Not to state the obvious, but your strength is at RB. So I'm going scratch all RBs off the list, no matter how tempting they are, and narrow it down to a QB or WR.

I will also preface my comments by saying I rarely take a QB in the first round AND I've never been in a 20 person league.

So QB might be the right play here, but I would take a gamble and see if Pike, Mitchell or Alexander slide to the second round. Griffin will undoubtably be taken.

The WRs available are just too tempting for me. I would personally pick D. Johnson from Tulsa. But Carrier and Shipley are also options.

I'm also assuming you only start 1 QB...otherwise I would take Griffin. I also don't know what the QB and WR situation looks like for your league mates.

To sum up, IMO the choice is between Johnson, Carrier, Shipley and Griffin. Let us know what you decide and GL!
Alex

Hola!

I'm looking for a MUCH better seson this year as I only won one game last year and I AM THE COMMISH....UGH!!!!

Anway, I have the #2 pick in the draft this year (last year of my 20 roster keeper league) and wanted your opinion on who to take out of the following:

QB - Daryll Clark, Penn St.
QB - Robert Griffin, Baylor
QB - Jeremiah Masoli, Oregon
QB - Russell Wilson, North Carolina St.
QB - Tony Pike, Cincinnati
QB - Austin Davis, Southern Miss.
QB - Joe Webb, UAB
QB - Bo Levi Mitchell, SMU
QB - Greg Alexander, Hawaii
QB - Aaron Corp, USC
RB - Charles Scott, LSU
RB - Toby Gerhart, Stanford
RB - Darren Evans, Virginia Tech
RB - Bryce Beall, Houston
RB - Vai Taua, Nevada
RB - Jacquizz Rodgers, Oregon St.
RB - Matt Asiata, Utah
WR - Mardy Gilyard, Cincinnati
WR - Jordan Shipley, Texas
WR - Golden Tate, Notre Dame
WR - Ryan Broyles, Oklahoma
WR - Kris Adams, UTEP
WR - Damaris Johnson, Tulsa
WR - Tyron Carrier, Houston

Scoring is as follows;
Receiving yards = 1 pt for every 20 yards
Rushing yards = 1 pt for every 20 yards
Passing yards = 1 pt for every 50 yards
Rushing/Receiving TDs = 6 pts
Passing TDs = 3 pts

We are allowed to keep 8 from last year's roster:

QB - Jake Locker, Wash
QB - Adam Weber, Minn
RB - Jahvid Best, Cal
RB - Noel Devine, WV
RB - DeMarco Murray, ou
RB - Darrell Scott, Col
RB - Mikell Simpson, Va

Thanks for the assistance and keeping up a KICK ASS website!
 - Tony/Houston 05/20/2009
Hey Tony...I don't think we got your full list of potential keepers. Let me know as it could change the answer.
Alex

Fellas, I noticed that you didn't give much treatment to Utah State in your WAC spring preview, but as a fellow Spartan, who always thought that the real problem during the JLS era was JLS's unwillingness to fire Chris Smeland, I'm left wondering why you aren't thinking, like I am, that a Dave Baldwin offense versus WAC defenses will likely result in some HUGE numbers for Diondre Borel and Robert Turbin a la Drew Stanton and Jason Teague in those 8 or 10 games that they really blew it up during 04 and 05. Thoughts?  - John, Chicago 05/19/2009
You are 100% right. I actually had some notes on Baldwin in the article prep, but just didn't weave it into the piece for whatever reason. I went the Anderson route instead. Probably because I didn't want to completely vulture what we have in Borel's preview (see post below). I updated it for you...but not enough to blow your cover. ;)

The offense will definitely be opened up. And we're also sure to see plenty for trick plays once the Aggies hit the 35 yard line (I'm sure you remember those).

Brian is very high on Turbin and if he had his way he'd be in out Top 40 RBs. I'm not sold on the HUGE part, but both could be nice pickups late in the draft or off waivers.

I now have to go take an asprin and mix a stiff drink...thanks for mentioning JLS.
Alex

1) When will you start doing your position previews where you rank and write a little bit about each player??

2) What do you think of drafting Marve or Cameron Newton in a keeper league?? Marve was an all world recruit who left a corrupt program when it became clear they would never be good. Cameron showed a ton of promise (was higher then Brantley on depth chart) before he went all klepto, stole a lap top and then decided to log on to it using his own ID. The rumor is he is gonna play a year at Blinn and then go UT.
 - Brad / Omaha 05/19/2009
Well that has already started? They will be released in about two weeks. You can find our rankings in the draft kit, but they will be tweaked between now and then.

I'd probably feel better about drafting Marve. Purdue could use him....to bad he can't play this year. Without knowing where Newton ends up makes him too risky.

UT is obvious not sold on the QBs in the program going after Marve and Newton.
Alex

I'm looking at the Big XII mock draft over and over. Personally, I would have done the same thing as Jim. Let all those quarterbacks go and nab Gresham and Bryant, grab one of the two solid D's in Texas and OU, and just take your pick out of Robinson, Reesing, or Griffin. One thing that I would like to know is which team has the best offensive line situation out Tech, UT, and OU.  - Brian, TX 05/18/2009
Hey Brian,

I agree with you on a lot of levels. I was all set to take Gresham with my second pick, and then Potts was sitting there. I wussed out and nabbed the system play, but I'm kind of kicking myself because I do see the top Big XII quarterbacks posting comparable numbers. In Gresham and Bryant he has far and away the top producers at TE and WR.

As far as o-lines go it's clear that Oklahoma lost the most, but this doesn't mean they'll be horrible. They'll just have some growing pains.

Texas returns the most experience, making the thought of Colt McCoy behind an even better o-line downright scary.

Texas Tech loses less than Oklahoma, but a case could be made that they will not have talent that's AS ready as the Sooners.
Brian

You know what I feel is being ignored this off season: Kickers. You may laught but each of the semi final games in my league were determined based on kickers. What do you think of the following kickers: Lincoln at Tenn, Forbath at UCLA, Bosher at UM and Lawrence at UT??  - Brad / Omaha 05/18/2009
Hey Brad,

Kickers, eh? Well to start it's true that we've done a good deal of ingnoring those that boot em through the uprights, however we'll be finalizing our rankings as we get an even better feel for what each offense will be in 2009.

For the guys you asked:

Hunter Lawrence is the best of that bunch. In fact he's sixth in our Draft Kit, due primarily because of the Texas offense. He's a senior that will put up plenty of points, even if it is one at a time.

Matt Bosher is next on our board, and while we're intrigued by what the Miami defense can become we're not certain they'll post enough points/provide enough scoring opps.

Daniel Lincoln isn't even a lock to start this season. He's the favorite, but he had a rough spring. The new sheriff in Knoxville doesn't owe him anything.

Kai Forbath is certainly a talent, but the UCLA offense doesn't have us expecting offensive fireworks.

Essentially there's a huge dropoff from Lawrence to the other three. Senior + UT offense = big numbers.

Brian

After reading the big 12 mock draft I think out of the RB's, Kendal Hunter will see a drop off in production and see Jake Sharp getting more production.

Okie State is just too talented at the RB position with Hunter, Keith Totson, and Beau Johnson. With Totson being a SENIOR and overcoming fumbling problems early in his career I think Gundy will reward him for his perserverance and look to him more and give Hunter some rest. On the other hand I see Sharp as the only legimate runner at Kansas so Brian's early pick on Sharp is much warranted. Once Sharp beat out Angus Quigley and Jocques Crawford last year he showed flashes of brillance against Colorado and K. State.

Murray/Brown are rock solid but both could drive you nuts come saturday.

My question is figuring out the #2 WR's in the big 12. We know Ship, both Dez's, and Broyles should be legit but finding that #2 on each of the those teams could be quite challenging.

One thing for sure is the Big 12 trend will most likley continue next year.
 - Tom/Nyc 05/15/2009
We are on the same page with Sharp. I think the same applies to Reesing. Both hold high value in this year's draft(s) and like last year will get passed over by others.

Not sure I agree on Hunter. I don't see the workload shifting too much from where it was last year. But we won't know until the kick it off in September.

If you use the filter on our draft kit...and filter the WRs in the Big 12...we are pegging Adron Tennell (Ok), Malcom Williams (Tx) and Justin Blackmon (OkSt) as the #2 WRs for those schools. In fact, last Thursday Tim Griffin even pegged Tennell as emerging as the Sooners' #1. Click on the Big 12 Mock Draft in the BlogTalk player on the front page to hear Tim talk about it. We have Blackmon ranked much lower based on the fact the Cowboys didn't spread the ball around as much as the others last year...but that could change in 2009.

Alex

Adam's team of Weber, Royster, and Minor looks stout. Northwestern's D would be his make-or-break position.
Speaking of D ... Iowa and Penn St taken before Ohio State? Really? Please shed some light on this thinking for me. Iowa?
 - Jason / Nashville 05/02/2009
We've had a few votes for Adam's squad. Are we going to get smoked by a rook?

I can't speak for JB, but I picked PSU strickly on ease of schedule...namely their 4 non-conference games. Based on our rankings, Ohio State has the toughest defensive schedule of the three. And even though they all have significant losses, all three are ranked in our prelim top 10...so were are probably splitting hairs on this one...or are rankings are whack.
Alex

Any thoughts of incorporating a forum into the website?

Alex, we lost one forum at PFS that used to have some good questions and discussions...would be nice if we could get something similar here.
 - JT, Phoenix 05/02/2009
It's been discussed and there are few reasons we haven't. The biggest is we simply don't have the man hours to moderate it. If there is increased demand for one, it is something we would consider adding.Alex

Will the players rankings change before fall ball?

Also, any information on Luke Lippinott? Will he be worthy selection come draft day?
 - Jacob/KC 05/01/2009
Our rankings are fluid. They change as we receive info...which is daily. We've been making tweaks throughout spring practice and will be sitting done once we finish our spring wraps/evaluations for a major re-rank. This will mostly mean organizing the guys ranked 40 and beyond, making some adjustments based o ease of schedule (schedules were not released when we posted our initial rankings in Jan) and finailizing our stat projections. I'd say our rankings are about 70% complete right now.

Keep in mind these rankings will continue to be adjusted throughout fall camp as news comes our way.

As far as Luke is concerned, he is back and split carries is are a major concern at Nevada. The exact split is largely unknown....which makes them both a risk. That said I can easily see one of them going off.

I have poured over the stats and have found.....  - Erik/ Lafayette, IN 04/27/2009
Hey Erik, hit me up at admin@cffinsider.com...as the answer to your question gives away a future piece we are working on.Alex

Im trying to decide who to keep in my Big Ten Plus Florida league. Im allowed two. Adam Weber, Eric Decker, Brandon Saine, Deleon Eskridge are my top choices. I have the second pick and Daryl clark will be available. The best backs available will be Jaycen Taylor, All Florida RBs, Daniel Dufrene, Stephon Green, And Brown from wisc. Thanks for your help  - Steve, Ohio 04/21/2009
Decker would still be my top keeper, but obviously you need to watch the June MLB draft.

Man it is going to be tough picking RBs in Big 10 leagues this year (and I am in one as well). I'd probably keep Saine over Eskridge. And then pick Clark.
But I'm not confident about this.

The other option is to keep Weber and take your chances with the plethora of split carry backs.

Or heck (depending on how many people are in your league) keep Decker/Weber and then draft Clark and hold one of them hostage as trade bait for a better RB.

As for your other question regarding the Draft kit...right now no. But we will see what we can do.
Alex

I know that with split carries you usually don't draft either but here is a list of split receptions: Who would you choose?
Golden Tate/Michael Floyd
Jeff Fuller/Ryan Tannehill
Detron Lewis/Britton/Leong
Patrick Edwards/Tyron Carrier
Slick Shelley/Damaris Johnson
Bryan Anderson/Antonio Brown
Terrell Turner/Delshaun Dean/Bug Wright
Titus Young/Austin Pettis
Also, I'm thinking Juan Nunez from Western Michigan is set for a breakout year. What do you think?
 - Erik/ Lafayette, IN 04/20/2009
We'll have more on this once we get through our spring updates. From that list, here would be my personal picks

Floyd
Fuller
Edwards
Johnson
Brown? (not sold on this one...but taking the speed guy)
I'll pass on Zona WRs right now, but Bug had a nice spring
Pettis

Agree on Nunez...someone has to catch the ball.
Alex

First thanks for providing such a great site and constantly (even in the off-season!) keeping it up to date with new information.

I just had a general question. My friends and I have been doing the college fantasy league for a few years now. I was just curious how big has College Fantasy Football become? Didn't know if you had any sort of stats or insight into this.

Thanks again!
 - Tim/Chicago 04/20/2009
CFF is still considered a niche' sport. Especially when compared to the NFL. But it is growing rapidly. And it is going to grow even more this year. There are a lot of things in the works, not only here, but elsewhere as well that is going to bring more attention to CFF.Alex

I'm torn as to who to keep in my keeper league...Andre Anderson or Charles Clay. You've got Anderson ranked substantially higher, but it feels to me like there could potentially be a bigger upside with Clay especially since he could be more of a receiving threat. What do you think?  - Ben/Tulsa 04/16/2009
Ben,

Great question. Alex has gone all in on Charles Clay (see the mock draft on the front), and I agree that Clay's ceiling is EXTREMLEY high in that Tulsa offense.

Anderson is safer, but that's primarily because he's more likely to get his carries...and that makes him less of a less risk at a high pick. Because Clay's touches are somewhat dependant on another getting him the ball, he is a little bit more of a risk.

In may ways the running backs are one big group of guys whom we could really split hairs on. Give me a MiQuale Lewis/Charles Clay combo or a Andre' Anderson/Kendall Hunter combo and I'm probably going to be happy either way.

However I would still protect Anderson first. He wasn't right health wise after October 11, yet in the short time he showed all we needed to see. Anderson did a nice job replacing Forte, and his shoulder will be ready for summer/fall.

Still, you tell me that you're going to take a shot with your hometown boy Clay and I won't find much fault with it.

Not sure what you are refering to...can you post link to the page you are refering too?Alex

who do you think will come out of the wr mess from ark? will there be a go to WR or WRBC? Wright, Crawford, Adams? i think an ark WR would be worth a shot in the late rounds...just need to pick the right one!  - tom/nyc 04/02/2009
Hey Tom,

Once we get past D.J. Williams it's hard to envision one go-to guy, so your by committee concerns are warranted. If I'm taking a flyer on one guy later in the draft then I like London Crawford. He can make plays, but consistency has been his issue.
Brian

Any word on Oregon WR Chris Harper staying or transferring to K-State?

Would he be a solid player at QB @ K-State (fantasy wise of course) in you opinion?
 - J-Dawg/UF 03/23/2009
Good question...I was thinking about that as well when we did the Blount/James updates. We'll see if we can find anything. They don't kick off spring ball until the 30th, so we may not hear much until then.

And for the second part, I do think he would be a factor at QB for K-State. He's a great athlete. The problem is he would have to sit out a year obviously.

Update: Nothing but speculation right now....let's see what happens on the 30th.

Colt McCoy throws pick in practice? Ya'll are officially TOO hardcore. Thats why ya'll are the best. Keep it up.  - Brian, TX 03/12/2009
Brian,

Anyone else and we may not have mentioned it. Because it's Colt McCoy, who has thrown about 2 incomplete passes in his life...we figure it's big news. :)

Besides I made a preseason trade with Jim before last season where I acquired the Texas Colt. I like mentioning him just to drive poor Mr. Belanger crazy.
Brian

You mention WR Michael Calvin as a potential break-out star in '09. He did squat last year so what has changed at Cal to make you think this season could be better for him?
Thanks.
 - Jason / St Louis 03/05/2009
There a few factors that make Calvin one to watch. Like last year...he was a top athlete coming out of HS in 2007 and Cal is in desperate need of playmakers at WR. Unfortunately his season was derailed due to injury last year...missing most of the year because of a toe injury. For the same reasons as last year...he is once again someone that could emerge out of no where this year. We're not saying he is a high or even a mid round pick...but someone to watch this spring/fall and possibly take a stab at in the later rounds of your draft. The keyword here is 'potential'.Alex

IF Leach gets fired, I think its safe to assume they hire from within, probably the DC Ruffin.

With that said, a firing could signal a chain reaction that would be felt all across the CFF community. I think tomorrow is THE biggest day of college fantasy football we'll see where no points have been scored.

**Update**Disregard my last post. Leach just reached a deal.
 - Brian, TX 02/19/2009
No question about it...thankfully the chancellor appears to have a good head on his shoulders and avoided the pending disaster. It takes some of the drama out of tomorrow's meeting...but I'd still like to be a fly on the wall of that meeting. I don't know the inner details, but the AD has to fell like the chancellor went behind his back a little. And kudos for doing so.Alex

When does the schedule for '09 come out and when will your sch. matcher be up?  - Jack/Pitt. 02/18/2009
Jim is working on the schedules now. Unfortunately there is no official release date. We are at the mercy of the schools. The major conferences just started releasing their final schedules last week. As soon as they are all finalized (or at least most of them), the schedule matcher will be up. Right now we are at the mercy of the schools.Alex

Yo mel,,,,,,16 of 19 for Josh Czajkowskia gives you 84.2 % fg percentage not 81
if you havent attmpted 15+ you ought not be on the list.....PERIOD
 - alex Virginia 02/14/2009
Greetings Alex,

The number (81) to which you refer is his fantasy points, not his percentage, which you've correctly deemed to be 84.2%.
Brian

In your "Incomming Freshman" article you mention "saving the best for last." Well in a league with a premium on defense, a look ahead at impact players on D, or just a general look ahead of D's, would be this readers "best." I know it's only Feburary but I just couldn't help myself.  - CJ / St Louis 02/09/2009
A man after my own heart. We put a premium on defense in our main league as well. Unfortnately I don't think that is the case for most leagues. We just don't see a lot of questions regarding Ds, which is why we don't post on it very often.

Now more to your question. Breaking down the potential impact or performance of a single freshman is tough enough. Trying to project the impact a player might have on a defensive unit as a whole would certianly be even more difficlut. And I curse the day that college fantasy footballers start getting into IDP. I've been fearful of even so as not to give people any ideas. Our database would likely explode do to the volume of players. I'm sure it is coming though.

When we look at the defensive ranks, I'm high on Jr and Sr laden defenses. However, if we are taking a peak down the road there is some value at looking at which teams did well on the defensive side of the ball in recruiting. And maybe headlining a few guys. I'll take a look at. But I don't know if I'll make a whole article out of it (maybe...we'll see where it takes me). I'll post some more info in this post later this week. And we'll hit it hard when we do our D breakdowns after spring ball.

Two guys off the top of my head are Willie Downs of FSU and Patrick Hall of USC...two impact athletes that probably end up at safety. Hall is going to get a look at RB first though.

Keep in mind SEC and ACC school notoruiously oversign players (and then ship them to prep schools or JCUOs), making it more difficult.
Alex

wtf? tell me who to start.  - Randy, Chicago 02/08/2009
Good players. Knower of all

I'm having a hard time finding a site that people can join for college fantasy leagues. Can you recommend any? Thanks.  - Murph/Sacramento 02/03/2009
Take a look under the "our partners" section on the mainpage.

I doubt any are taking signups right now...but as a quick guide. U-Sports is pay per play site, but highly customizable. CBSsports is free, but you have to use their rules (at least that was the case last year).
The Magic Tones

Another RB question about someone we may have all forgot about. Andre Dixon-UConn was considered a decent sleeper going into last year's draft. With Brown gone, do you think he could be an everydown back for UConn's offense? Or will guys like Jordan Todman and Robbie Frey create a split carry backfield? This should be interesting to watch this spring.  - The Dawgfather 01/31/2009
We have Dixon in the 40s in our initial rankings. I think Brian had a good assessment of Dixon and Todman in our Big East Look Ahead as well...check it out. Alex

So is Matt Scott the man in Arizona? Going to have a big 2009? Is AJ Whitmore going to be in the running at Tulsa for starting QB? Is Justin Siller at Purdue going to huge in 2009? Thanks Guys.  - Chris/Oklahoma 01/29/2009
Scott seems to be the favorite, but personally I like Nick Foles...big, strong armed...watch out for him this spring. See our Pac-10 Look Ahead.

Whitmore seems to have carved his niche' catching and running the football. I can't see a reason for him to switch from WR...especially given his size. He'll get some snaps in the 'wildcat' like last year though.

Personally not a big fan of Siller because of his lack of an arm. But I've been wrong before. He is dangerous on the ground.

Alex

I realize Coach Leach has usually not side-stepped the 2nd stringer when deciding on a QB the following year when replacing the stud at hand, ie. Cumbie, BJ, Hodges, Harrell. With that in mind it appears you have gone on bandwagon with tabbing Taylor Potts as the heir-apparent. My inquiry surrounds Seth Doege. Does he have any chance going into Spring as Co#1 and possibly overtaking Potts by end of Spring or middle of fall camp? It appears the Coaching staff is split on who the "man" really is. Can you shed light on this as I am desirous of keeping Doege on a keeper league.  - Tom, Lincoln, Ne 01/26/2009
Hey Tom,

If an opportunity presents itself to nab Seth Doege do so in a heartbeat. Take a look at a blurb we posted earlier this month:

Most Recent Player News & Notes

01/04/2009 Seth Doege a threat to Taylor Potts?
Brandon George of The Dallas Morning News believes that expected heir apparent to Graham Harrell, Texas Tech quarterback Taylor Potts, may have to fend off sophomore-to-be Seth Doege, who has his fans on the coaching staff. We expect Potts to emerge as the Texas Tech starter next fall, thus automatically ascending to the top five of our quarterback rankings for 2009 (which will be out soon). However, Mike Leach will always be capable of surprises, and this makes Seth Dodge (or any other quarterback near Lubbock for that matter) as one to still keep an eye on.

Based on the info we have today, Potts is our leader to take over. Keep in mind these rankings are will and do change as info becomes available. this is our best 'guess' as of today. We've lumped guys that are fighting for the starting gig together in the past...and most didn't like it. So we've gone with 'prediciting' the starter and ranking accordingly. Consider the #2 spot more of a place holder for the T-Tech QB.

Potts may stink up the joint and Doege may become the next great QB...we've been wrong before. We're still banking on Leach going with the expected heir apparent....but ya never know.

Keep Doege. If he does start and put up Texas Tech QB numbers I want you to go out for a great steak at Gorat's.

Brian

#25?? #25!!! Because of Luke Lippincot? Vai Taua (French for where is the love my bit#@es? Excuse my french.)  - Paul/Miami 01/25/2009
Lipponcott is Scotish for I'm the sh%$Alex

Pretty much my entire team comes back to help me defend my title. All I really need next year is a young WR or two. What do you think of the following, all will be available next year.

Fuller
Posey
Baldwin
Buckner
Aldarious Johnson
 - Mike / FL 01/25/2009
Big Posey guy because of his talent. Not sure if OSU will throw enough to make him a fantasy threat though. Same goes for Baldwin. Fuller is probably the safest bet.

We have a sleeper pick stuffed in the top 50 of our rankings (think BYU). High risk / high reard, but worth keeping an eye on this spring.

Alex

What do you guys think about Chris Burns next year, and beyond?  - Chris, Richmond 01/25/2009
I assume you are talking about the Pitt RB. He looked good on film in HS. Unfortunately that is all we have to go on. If McCoy wasn't around, he would of been ranked higher on our freshman RB list last April.

He has a shot to start...but no one will replace McCoy. And Pitt's offense is not exactly a juggernaut. Nutshell: good talent, potential, unproven, and offence could limit potential.
Alex

OK, you opened it up for feedback. And I know this is a fluid situation, but a few RB names jumped out at me (BCS only league champ 3 of the last 5 years) ...

Ingram, Bama (too high, Saben has always used 2 or 3 backs)

Clay, Wisconsin (too low, waaay too low)

Stewart, Colorado (too high, there are 3 RBs in Colorado and a healthy Scott will be a much bigger part of the show next year)

King, Georgia (too low, the kid is too good. sure Coach R talked up the other Freshman RB toward the end of the season but he still didn't get more carries than King).
 - Proven / Missouri 01/24/2009
Are you bagging on my guy Ingram? Where's the love?

Looks like Clay is going to hot commodity on draft day.

We appreciate the feedback.
Alex

Hey guys- I have started breaking down some numbers and players like you have with your 2009 player rankings and I have 2 players that we are pretty far apart on. This is for a BCS only league. I really like John Clay & Baron Batch in 2009. I think Clay can be a top 5 RB in 09. I see him having a year similar to PJ Hill in 06 when he had 1569 yards rushing and 15 TD's. As for Batch, he had 1200 total yards and 8 TD's in a split role. With Batch seeing more action, I could envision 1400 total yards and 14 TD's. Do you guys think I'm off my rocker on these guys? Keep up the great work fellas!  - Kevin/Easton,PA 01/24/2009
Not at all. Obviously everyone will have different opinions on where guys will land. We are very high on Clay, love the power he runs with. He should be this year's Shonn Greene of the B10. We have him at 17, but I could easily see him ending up in the top 5 at the end of year. Great upside.

Personaly I HATE puting exact numbers next to guys names for this reason. There are a dozen guys in Clay's range that could do the same. However, we have to rank them. So as a bit of an explanation on our ranking: 1) most of the guys ahead of him are already proven commodities and 2)Zach Brown will command carries. He is a change of pace to Clay, so there is the threat of split carries....more so than with some of the guys ranked ahead of him. The good news is, even if Brown sees significant touches, Clay will be the goaline back.

Regarding Batch, I think we've all (I've been guilty of it) of chasing the ghost of Taureen Henderson a little bit. He'll see some competition from Crawford and as sexy as T-Tech backs' final stats always look...they can drive owners insane with their inconsitency. Even Henderson was inconsistent. Three TDs one game and 47 yards rushing the next. I think he was traded a half dozen times in one of my leagues because of it.

That said I think our ranking is definitely too low based on 'potential' and look for an adjustment on Batch.

Thanks for the feedback.
Alex

Brandon Minor, Michigan and Derrick Washington, Missouri ... will both improve on their '08 numbers? I have worries about Washington being able to match this years output will all new skill players around him. Thoughts?  - Goose / St Louis 01/23/2009
I will say no on Washington. And yes on Minor.

Taking a look at our initial 2009 player rankings (that we've posted in the cover of darkness) Washington takes a huge fall. Washington is the 8th leading returning point getter...but checks in at number 30 on our list (along with 10 others).

Washington was a great vulture back in 2008. With Maclin and Daniel gone, the offense will likely struggle a bit and I just don't see as many "opportunities" to score. That said, maybe the offense leans more on him and he proves us wrong.

The price tag on Washington will probably be too high for me on draft day based on 2008 numbers.

Before the season started I didn't have much faith in Minor. Just didn't see it from him in 2007. I thought Carlos Brown would emerge as the top fantasy back in 2008, due to his speed. Injures kept both from truly emerging. But, after a few games I started to change my opinion on Minor...dude was running hard. Minor was one guy on the field for Mich that truly giving maximum effort. I was surprised they didn't feed him more.

If he can stay healthy, Minor has great upside. Problem is, the same can still be said for Brown. Minor is a not a sure thing, but worth the investment on draft day.
Maverick

Who will be the next RB to step up @ Purdue ?  - Smooth 22/IND 01/22/2009
If Jaycen Taylor is granted a medical redshirt / hardship waiver, he should be the leader.

If not look for Dan Dierking to take the reigns.
Alex

Who will be the top RB for Tulsa next year and will they have similar numbers to Adams?

Also, what do you guys think of the WVU offensive system in 2009? Will they still run the QB option without White, or will they tend to run more of a passing oriented offense?

I am just not sold on there coach.
 - Jeremy/Miss. 01/19/2009
We have Clay in our Top 25. He's a burner that has played RB and slot the last two years. Great for PPR leagues. Numbers were down in '08 because he was banged up. With Adams and Tennial gone...we are assuming he takes over the full-time RB duties...but we'll have to wait and see. Bottom-line, uber-talented back in a good system...high upside.

Overall I would agree on Stewart. I don't see him taking WVU to the next level or even sustaining them long term...especialy when it comes to recruiting. I thought one of he best bets of 2008 was WVU would not win the Big East (mainly because of the loses at D and Slaton) even though they were a heavy preseason favorite.

That said I'm a big fan of Jarrett Brown. He's a athletic kid that has played QB, RB and WR the last two years bidding his time behind White. He doesn't have the wheels of White...no one does. But is bigger and has a better arm. There is a lot of talk that they will move to a more passing orientated system, but I'm not completely buying it. I think you'll see the same overall spread-option system, with a little less QB run and a little more QB pass. I could easily see him hitting the 30 TD mark on the year.
Alex

Noel Devine, your thoughts for 2009?

A "long" offseason means he could come into spring out of shape with "smoke" filled lungs, or maybe even not make grades and be ineligible. How would you rate him for next year, and would you draft him like a solid performer or a sleeper?
 - The Dawgfather 01/18/2009
TD production wasn't there, but I still like him. I know Brian would disagree. Worthy of a flier pick IMO.Alex

Alot of stud freshman RB's here on the west coast did not make as big of impact last year as was expected at least two of them because of injury. What do you think about the following backs going into their rs fr. or soph years:

Dean, UCLA
Bass, Zona State
Polk, Wash
Scott, Colorado
Grey, A&M
 - Casey / Las Vegas 01/16/2009
Casey,

We'll hit a lot of those dudes in our look-aheads, but here are my initial thoughts:

Aundre Dean: I had him pegged as a freshie sleeper and Alex didn't see it. He was right. There were some rumblings of unhappiness but if he hangs around Westwood then he's a definite candidate to start at TB next year.

Ryan Bass: Will get a shot. How bad will ASU be though?

Chris Polk: Sarkisian and Locker will make a world of difference. Many see a change to the slot as a full-time destination. Polk is a super talent, but he doesn't have the Jacquizz Rodgers build to withstand the pounding.

Darrell Scott: Needs to stay healthy. A good summer and he could surpass Rodney Stewart on depth chart. Just too much talent. Doesn't appear like he'll transfer.

Cyrus Grey: The commitment of Christine Michael casts doubt on Grey. By all accounts Goodson is gone, but we've had a hard time digging up info.

Brian

What's up with Mike Goodson? Is he heading for the draft? If not, what's his status at A&M? Sherman said a month ago he doesn't expect Goodson to return - I get the impression there's something more going on there besides just early draft entry.  - Bob, Des Moines 01/15/2009
Good question Bob. We've been waiting for the Goodson's announcement as it seemed like a forgone conclusion. We'll put the bloodhounds on it.Alex

This is in response to TK from Houston. We have a 10 team keeper league that drafts in Houston (league run on U-sports). I have heard rumors that one guy might not come back and if so we might be looking for a replacement. If you want to get me your info, I can keep you updated.  - JT, Phoenix 01/13/2009
Sounds like we may have a fit...if you guys are interested, email me your email addy's to admin@cffinsider.com and I'll swap them offline.Alex

I have a suggestion. On the stats pages, you can get fantasy stats for all the players. For leagues that use defenses, its hard to find which ones stand out because there is no way to sort by points on defenses. Incorporate fantasy stats for defenses.

Just a litttle advice for noobs to the college game who are NFL fantasy players that I see all the time. The old adage of taking running backs first does not work in college fantasy football. Get a good quarterback with your first pick. Number one rule of college fantasy football right there.
 - Brian, TX 01/13/2009
Thanks for the feedback Brian. For all those reading, now is the time (and this is the place) to put in your 2009 suggestions.

Regarding defenses, it is tough to score fantasy defenses because the different point systems. I bet I could poll 10 different leagues and they all score Ds differently. However we have a 'fix' for this coming. Stay tuned.

Just an FYI for everyone, you can sort by all of the offensive and defensive categories by clicking on the header (including pts/against).

Regarding the drafts...I don't think I've drafted a QB in the first round in four or five years. It has come to a point where it has become a challenge to see how long I can go without drafting a QB.
Alex (Noob #1)

I am interested in entering into a keeper league. I have been participating in College Fantasy Football for 9 years.

Do you know of any leagues that have openings for the 2009 season?
 - TK/Houston 01/13/2009
Anyone have a need for a dedicated owner?

It is a little early yet TK, but we'll get our league bulletin board back up for those looking for owners or leagues to join.
Alex

What are your thoughts on Brian Maddox next year?? The guy was a stud recruit and I am hoping he can beat out Baker and the Frosh for the starting job. South Car. RB's have been pretty productive the last few years.  - Aaron / Chapel Hill 01/08/2009
Hey Aaron,

The bowl game sure didn't help, though it definitely wasn't all Maddox's fault. We were hoping to see more than three carries, but of course, when the Gamecocks only try to run the ball 14 times...

It's definitely time for Maddox to shine, but I just can't say that he'll beat out Baker or Jarvis Giles.

With the quarterback woes, a head coach that is probably dreaming of Pebble Beach and an offense that despite the solid running production in the past, doesn't look like it'll never be in sync (or is it NSYNC?) I'm not too high on Maddox in 09.
Brian

Hey guys. Thanks again for all of the help this season. There are aspects of College Fantasy Football that are more intriguing than the "real" thing. You guys have a great site.

I would love to participate in a league that does an early draft, like in February/March. I don't know how to go about setting one up on U-Sports and if you experts would be willing/able to incorporate the results to your viewers with the possibility of allowing them access to view the website. Almost a behind the scenes look at how you guys develop a team and your thought process in week-to-week. (Or of course it could just be an early, early mock draft.) Thanks guys. Vai Taua (Finlandish for Stay retired Luke.)

Thanks, Paul.
 - Paul/Miami 01/07/2009
That's a good idea. We are in a number of leagues, some are with between us that are "serious". Others with other websites, writers, etc. Mostly for fun and bragging rights.

One thing we didn't do is any commentary on the drafts or during the season. We probably should...I thought about having each of us post our weekly rosters so you could see who we were picking up and starting...but never figured out a good way to do it. Something we should incorporate next year.

Is this what you are talking about?

We also have some other plans/ideas along these lines which I don't want to spill yet. But stay tuned.
Alex

Clemson's RB Jamie Harper in '09 ... stud or dud? What is Spiller doing?  - LuBug / Missouri 01/07/2009
LuBug,

Spiller can't make up his mind. He's taking classes this week, and he needs to decide pretty quick as the Jan. 15 deadline is fast approaching.

He goes and Harper definitely exits Dudville in 2009. Harper had a rough first year, but he stuck it out on special teams and in limited ground duty.

There's a whole lot of offensive production leaving Clemson, and Harper will play a role, but especially if Spiller heads to Sunday.
Brian

Why no Mark Ingram in the top 25?

Quick question about the Tulsa QB spot next season.

I see it coming down to Bower, GJ Kinne, and Beaver. I know Bower has to lead early on, but what are you thoughts?
 - Brian/Ark 01/06/2009
Depends on what Coffee will do. Obv we are high on Ingram (especialy me) and he will jump into the top 15 if Coffee goes pro. If Coffee comes back we are back to split carry situation again.

The Tulsa QB question will be a hot one all offseason. Bower battled Johnson down to the wire (allegedly) last year so we are giving the edge to Bower. Obv we will have to see what happens this spring as we haven't had a chance to see what Kinne can do. My guess is it comes down to these two.

Beaver is a freshman and even though he should be on campus for spring ball, he'll is likley be headed for a redshirt with depth in front of him. Beaver's longterm value at Tulsa is good...but his near term value would have been better at Mich.

Hope you can settle a disagreement. I say Darryl Clark, Penn State and Manuel Johnson, Oklahoma are done after this year, they can't come back. A buddy is telling me both can and will be back. What's the ruling?  - John/ Ann Arbor 01/06/2009
Well you're both right. Clark will be back...see one of the updates on his player page from a while back. To the best of my knowledge MJ is out of eligbilty.Alex

If Sam McGuffie goes to RIce.........will the departure of the O coordinator be a blow to him?

Is McGuffie a keeper with 7 RB league?
 - John/KC 01/04/2009
John,

It's a little early to tell. Though even with the OC's departure don't expect head man David Bailiff (who has just been offered a nice extension) to sway too far from what's worked of late at Rice.

In the league you describe I still think McGuffie is a solid keeper. Though I think his concussion issue should cause more concern than a slight change in offensive philosophy. More hard hits and his career may be shortened considerably.
Brian

Is it time for spring ball yet? I need a fix for '09. Top BCS Fantasy QB's next year ... McCoy and T. Potts in the top 5 right? Discuss.  - Antsy / Missouri 01/03/2009
Don't tell anyone but our prelim 2009 top 25 by position is done....just waiting for Jan. 15 to come and go to confirm the early entries.Alex

Which team in college has the most player suspensions? Does this info exist?  - Joe, Virginia 01/01/2009
I don't have a link, but I think a site calle 'I wish everyday was Saturday' had a running taly on this a little while ago. I seem to recall a number of SEC schools leading the charge. Although I don't think they were given Penn State their due.Alex

Who do you like here?

Two more starters needed from this group of RBs...

Da'Rel Scott
Eskridge
Spiller

One starter needed from these WRs...

Brian Hartline
Jacoby Ford
Toren Dixon
I already start Robiskie and Pryor.

Thanks!
 - Rod/Cleveland 12/29/2008
I almost took Spiller in a bowl draft. Wimped out and took D-Evans instead. But he intrigues me. I'm going: Spiller, Scott and the hot hand of Dixon. Hopefully Maryland shows up for you.Alex

who would you start out of the following. I can start 4 out of 6.

Charles Scott vs. G Tech
Javon Ringer vs. Georgia
Crabtree vs. Miss
Dez Bryant vs. Oregon
Naaman Roosevelt vs UCONN
Tyron Carrier vs Air Force

I'm leaning towards all of the wide outs. Crabman and Bryant are for sures. Roosevelt and Carrier are averaging more points than the two running backs over the last 5 weeks.

I also have Jacquizz Rodgers, but he's a risk to start cause of the shoulder. and i have have Evan Royster, but he's playing USC.
 - Ty, Minnesota 12/29/2008
I always prefer RBs over WRs because of the upside...so I would personaly rank them: Bryant/Crabtree (tie), Ringer, Scott, Carier and Roosevalt. I like Ringers chances against UGA...but that could be some homer talk coming through. So take it for what it is worth. However, we've been pretty fair/accurate on when he hasn't had the best of matchups.Alex

Did I read somewhere that James Casey might go pro???

Also, what are the QB options for Rice next year, and will they be an effective play next year?

I hope that DAMN Casey goes pro because my arch rival has him!
 - ChrisMa, Green Bay 12/28/2008
Casey was on our early entry watch list...check the article for more info. Given his age, versatility and the fact that Clement/Dillard are graduating I would be shocked if Casey doesn't go pro.

We haven't started our 2009 evaluation of Rice yet, but with all the talent leaving, I would put there fantasy prospects at low right now.
Alex

With Hoke heading to San Diego - any additional reasons to be exciting about Ryan Lindley's future?  - Chris, Richmond 12/24/2008
Possibly. But I would put it more on him being a young player that is going to improve/develop more so than Hoke's arrival. Keep in mind Hoke has a defensive background, Stan Parrish is not following him to SDSt and Nate Davis is a special talent.

Hoke's strength as a coach is his discipline and fundamentals, more so than scheme. The one stat that caught my attention more than any other is Ball State was the least penalized team in the last 5 years.

Let's see who he brings in as an OC. He's certianly a young player to watch, but I wouldn't reach too high for him.
Alex

Quick one for the bowl season:

James Davis or Tyrell Sutton?

Thanks.
 - Jim, Montreal 12/23/2008
I took Sutton in a recent bowl draft...but he is a risk.Alex

Are you guys having a Keeper League look ahead or anything with keeper information in the next few months?  - Sam 12/23/2008
Stick around Sam...we have plenty in store the next few months.Alex

I wanted to get your opinion on my starters during the bowl season:
QB - I am going to play D.Johnson agains Ball State; my other options were Tuitama, who I didnt play and Clausen against Hawaii
RB? Play 2
C. Wells vs Texas
M. Lewis vs Tulsa
B. Beall vs AirForce
B. West vs Rice
N. Devine vs UNC

WR? Play 3
C. Coffman vs NWestern
T. Saunders vs NWestern
T. Carrier vs Air Force
M. Gilyard vs Va Tech
D. Lewis vs Ole Miss
M. Johnson vs Florida

K - Wolfert

D - Cal or Kentucky or S. Carolina?
 - Phil/London 12/23/2008
Ball State's D has been tough, but I agree you gotta roll with DJ.

At RB I would play Wells and Lewis. West is an intriguing option though as well.

At WR I would play Carrier, Coffman and Gilyard.

Defense is such a crapshoot in the bowl games. I going to default to our rankings and say SC, even though they were done before the suspension of Cook.

Alex

How do you guys think Jarrett Brown will do next year?

Will he be worthy of a starter?
 - Jim 12/22/2008
I'm not sure where he will end up just yet, we've just started our conference look aheads which will kickoff in January. But he will likley be a Top 30 QB for 2009.Alex

down to my last draft spot. i need a wr. we are a yards-heavy league with a PPR.

i'm down to b.anderson, CMICH or d.lewis, TEXTECH. but also am open to mccluster or m.wallace, OLE MISS.

any thoughts? thanks
 - E, FLA 12/18/2008
McCluster does most of his damage on the ground so I'm gonna toss him out. Ole Miss also spreads it around pretty good so I'm eliminating Wallace. Although Wallace would probably be Brian's pick.

I'm not high on Texas Tech due to the motivation factor. Obv you can't bench Harrell or Crabcakes, but I would avoid the next tier of Tech fantasy players like Lewis.

I know he has a bit of a down year, but I would still pick Anderson. I'm gonna pencil him in for 6 catches, 90 yards and a score.

GL!
Alex

So I'm in the Crapper Bowl, playing for draft position next year. The bowls are those playoffs and I have to choose two QBs from:
Darryl Clark, Penn St
Jevan Sneed, Ole Miss
Joe Ganz, Nebraska

What about 3 RBs from:
Harvey Unga, BYU
Damion Fletcher, Southern Miss
Charles Scott, LSU
CJ Spiller, Clemson

What do you think?
 - Bob / Houston 12/18/2008
I would scratch Clark based on USC's D. Tough call between the other two...my gut says Ganz but don't have a strong opinion either way.

Unga and Fletcher for sure...the other spot is the same as the QBs about. Gut is saying Spiller, don't have a strong opinion either way.

GL!
Alex

How could you write such a biased, ill-thought prediction like Michigan State beating Georgia in the Capital One bowl?

I hope you have tickets to Disney World, because that's the only place providing smiles to Sparties headed to Orlando this year.
 - Randy, Chicago 12/17/2008
I was just trying to get you fired up so you'd get off your ass and come down to the bowl game with us ;)

It might be the last time you get to see Moreno and Stafford.
Alex

Hey Guys: Thanks again for the advice throughout the season.

Our playoffs are the bowl games. I need to start 2 RBs (Charles Scott, Shonn Greene, Beanie Wells) and 2 WRs (Percy Harvin, Dexter McCluster, Detron Lewis, Kerry Meier). Who would you pick?

Thanks!
 - Hubert David - Montreal 12/15/2008
Greene and Beanie Wells seem to be the choices at RB. Harvin at one wide receiver spot and then it is kind of a toss up between McCluster and Meier for me. As long as he is healthy (no reports yet) I would probably start Meier.Alex

R there any good sites for college fantasy football during bowl season?

Chad
 - chad/illinois 12/13/2008
For league management? I don't know anyone that does. You are probably going to have to go oldschool and breakout the Excel spreadsheet.Alex

Thanks for the bowl update for player projections Alex.
Our draft is tomorrow and you projections will be priceless. I am assuming that this will be the last update before tomorrow. Is that correct? Thanks for all your help.

Pete
 - Pete 12/13/2008
The only thing I would "personaly" change would be downgrading the Texas Tech boys. I worry about their motivation. But it is hard to pass them up which is why we kept slidding them back up the rankings. Good Luck!Alex

With McGuffie leaving Michigan - what do you guys think of Michael Shaw long term?  - Chris, Richmond 12/13/2008
Right now you have a three-headed monster between Minor, Brown and Shaw. Barring injuries, which has plagued the first two, that seems to be order right now.Alex

Expand Auburn's list to include Steve Spurrier... He has been contacted... just ask finebaum  - yy/bham 12/11/2008
"If Jay Jacobs hasn't secured the No. 1 spot among the biggest buffoons in college athletics, it's only because a new poll hasn't been taken since the announcement of Tuberville's firing.

The first week of the search looks like the early auditions for "American Idol" with candidates running through the door in droves, falling over themselves and playing the fool. Instead of being professional, Jacobs is slipping morsels of misinformation to the press like its feeding time at the zoo." - Finebaum.

He's just bitter because Jay hasn't personally told him what is going on. Newsflash: just about every coaching search has "morsels of misinformation" slipped to the press. I'm guessing he also doesn't see the irony in his comments.

At first glance it does seem odd that Auburn has contacted everyone except well...me (wtf Jay?). However, I gotta say IMO he's picking the right group to interview and why not interview everyone you can?
Alex

We have a bonus bowl week, and I have three RBs that will be playing, have to pick two to start

Jonathan Dywer, Charles Scott, Damon Fletcher, Tyrell Sutton, Brandon West
 - Mark / Las Vegas 12/11/2008
Tough call Mark. Dwyer and Scott are probably the guys that will get a lot of carries and grind out the yards. West is a good schedule play against the porous Rice defense. Sutton and Fletcher are probably good, but you have the season-long lingering injury concerns. I would go with West and Dwyer, giving you one grinder and one upside schedule play. Good luck!Jim

I don't know if this is the right spot to do this but I'm in need of two owners for a 12-team, full keeper BCS and Independents league. With two more dedicated owners, I'm willing to bet this will be one of the more competetive leagues around. One team is in dire need of a rebuilding to be quite honest and another team could use a little work. If you are interested, email me at bhawk1128@gmail.com if willing to take a chance. Its a free, just for bragging rights league. We do our championship during the bowl season, if that is a plus for some people.  - Brian, TX 12/10/2008
Sure Brian, we'll post it up for you. Ladies and Gents, contact Brian from Texas if you want to jump into his league. Jim

hello. goodman didnt register a catch and ncaa.org shows that he did not even play in the game. know anything about that?  - e, fla 12/10/2008
He was injured on the first play and did not return to the game.Jim

Hey guys, our playoffs are the bowl games. Oklahoma's defensive meltdown last year cost me the championship, so looking for atonement. Who do you like of:

QB - Keenum or N. Davis

RB (Pick 2) - Best, Coffee, Blount, Quizz (if he even plays)

WR (Pick 3) - Maclin, D. Brown (suspended?), Goodman, Hafner

D - WVU or Florida? Florida has been stellar all year, but maybe not against the Sooners.

Thanks for the great site.
 - John, KY 12/09/2008
Tough call. We just posted our ranks. Davis has the better matchup. But Keenum has been hot and playing in Texas. In our initial ranks that I just posted, we have Keenum slightly ahead of Davis. But the difference is negligible. If I had to pick I would probably go with the stats and take Keenum...but this is judgement call.

Best and Blount for now. I'd sub Quizz in for Blount if he goes.

Brown is a go...I'll post it up shortly. So Maclin, Brown and probably Hafner.

Bowl game defenses are always tough and we haven't finished our D ranks yet. But I'm going to steer clear of Oklahoma and default to WVU.

Alex

Thanks Alex! Hey, would this work? I see you have a notes section in your player rankings. Could you add another column in the stats section and just put a check mark next to bowl-bound guys? Then I could sort them and get the same result as me culling through all the players. Hell, I don't know, just a suggestion.

Pete
 - Pete 12/08/2008
The QB, RB, WR and TE player ranks are up. The rankings ONLY include players/teams that have a bowl game. Note, these rankings may be adjusted over the next week as we dig into the bowl matchups further.

I've taken out the "Last Week" as one of the columns and replaced it by total fantasy points. You can sort by total fantasy points if you'd like.

This is the quickest and easiest solution. I check to see if I can get a filter on the main stats page but it won't be able to look at it until later in the week.

UPDATE:
2008 Player Stats - Bowl Teams Only
Alex

Are you guys going to come out with in-depth future rankings, prospects, analysis of coaches???

I was wondering because I would like to get planning for next year and save fome information for next year.

Thanks, and this is the best site I have been to. I have payed to get on sites and this site is even better than those, while being free!

You guys do a great job!
 - RROD/MICH 12/08/2008
We'll be around all offseason with bowl previews/rankings, conference look aheads, recruitng, spring notes, player news, prelim 2009 player rankings, etc. In a nushell we are as obsessed as you are. ;). Take a scroll through the article archive and it will give you a good feel for what is coming up. If you have anything specific you want to see, let us know. Everything above you mentioned above will be covered in some capacity.

But enough about us...what's the scoop with McGuffie and who are you going to start at QB next year....Beaver or Forcier?
Alex

Our draft will most likely be on the 17th. Don't know what you mean by "We'll be on it". On the other hand, you say it won't be a stats section, but player rankings. Please clarify.

You have outstanding stats that we use in all our drafts, but culling through all the player stats, can be cumbersome considering that half of the players in the stats won't be in a bowl. If your stats section could be abridged with only bowl-bound players, my task would be greatly simplified. As mentioned previously, I don't know how much of a problem it would be for you guys to do that. Thanks for your service.

Pete
 - Pete 12/08/2008
Isee what you are saying. I don't know if there is an easy way to filter cum stats for Bowl only players and teams. But I will see what we can do. We will have player rankings like usual and at minimum I will put the cum Fant Pts as one of the fields that u can sort.Alex

We protect 6 players from our roster for a bowl redraft lineup of 2 D, 3 QB, 4 RB, 4 TE/WR.

I am for sure going to protect David Johnson, Vai Taua, Kendall Hunter, Jarett Dillard, and Jeremy Maclin. I will get the first pick in every round (of which there are 7 rounds, 12 teams) from a player pool of all 34 bowl teams. My first round pick is also for sure going to be Case Keenum (Houston was not part of our regular season pool). This leaves me with the decision of who to protect with the 6th roster slot.

I have narrowed my choices to 3 guys and can keep either Tyrell Sutton vs. Missouri (19ppg; will he be back for sure?), C.J. Spiller vs. Nebraska (17 ppg), or Rob Gronkowski vs. BYU (14 ppg).

I am leaning Spiller only because of the Sutton injury questions and the fact that I can maybe get Gronk in the 4th round.

Also, I would like to know who I should go with for my second and third round picks. I want to fill out QB and RB with these picks because there won't be an elite receiver left here. I am not sure exactly who will be available so please rank these guys accordingly.

QB:
Levi Brown v. Southern Miss
Kellen Moore v. TCU
Jeremiah Masoli v. Oklahoma State
Andy Dalton v. Boise State
KNKE v. Wake Forest
Mark Sanchez v. Penn State
Greg Alexander v. Notre Dame
Matthew Stafford v. Michigan State
Lyle Moevao v. Pitt
Arkelon Hall v. South Florida
Jevan Snead v. Texas Tech
Russell Wilson v. Rutgers
Willie Tuitama v. BYU
Adam Weber v. Kansas

RB:
Tyrell Sutton (if I don't protect him) v. Missouri
CJ Spiller (if I don't protect him) v. Nebraska
Roy Helu v. Clemson
Evan Royster v. USC
DuJuan Harris v. Southern Miss
Brandon West v. Rice
Daniel Porter v. Northern Ilinois
Shannon Woods v. Ole Miss
Barron Batch v. Ole Miss
Jake Sharp v. Minnesota
Antone Smith v. Wisconsin
Curtis Steele v. South Florida
Andre Brown v. Rutgers
Da'Rel Scott v. Nevada
Darren Evans v. Cincinnati
James Davis v. Nebraska

If there are any of these RBs that I absolutely should not pass up for one of those QBs in the second round let me know.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
 - Reid, Cleveland 12/08/2008
I like C.J. over Sutton because of the injury factor. That game should also be a shootout and Arizona has a tough draw. Regarding ranking the QBs, we are just starting the ranking process and we "hope" to some have prelim ranks up tonight because I know some are going to start their drafts ASAP. So check back later. Alexander and Masoli are jumping out a me because of the matchups though. Another thought....how about looking at the RB or WR spot instead of QB? Seems like you could get some of these guys later and if you already have Johnson and Keenum, your looking good at QB. Alex

Were you guys planning to do a bowl-only stats section for those of us in fantasy bowl draft leagues?? By that I mean, will or can you have a stats section that excludes players who aren't playing in bowl games and includes only players who are playing in a bowl game? I don't know if it would be a lot of work or something that can be easily done.

Thanks,
Pete
 - Pete 12/07/2008
Pete,

We'll be on it. It won't be a stats section, but player rankings. When's your draft?
Brian

I won my league, which consists of all sorts of experts and CFF studs. I won't lie - it was a pretty incredible feat. Only problem now is that my commish won't send me the Cup. Can you believe that d-bag??  - In the bag / USA 12/06/2008
Sadly, I know exactly who you're talking about. Years from now, when I look back on everything, I will look back upon your #1 overrall selection of Gresham as one of the gutsiest, shrewdest decisions I will have witnessed in my life.

The commisioner is a petty man, hell bent on making those around him unhappy. Like you, I hate him.
Brian

Needing 37 yards or a touchdown this week for the points race. Opponent is done and I have Gronkoski and Vareen going. Please don't tell me that I'm in good shape because I need the money and I don't want to get my hopes up too soon. Just a last minute check on any possible updates regarding injuries, suspensions, mono, ect. Thanks for all the help.  - Crisp, SC 12/05/2008
You're totally screwed Crisp ;).

I can't find any negative info on your boys, good luck my man!
Jim

Jim, sounds like we need to send Brian another Thank You card for all his hard work again ;)  - Alex 12/05/2008
We love you Brian!Jim

Any chance or rumblings that Royster at Penn State goes pro?
Thanks
 - Stephon Green's Owner / Missouri 12/04/2008
Dear SGO,

When Alex, Jim and I brainstormed the early entry list I submitted Royster's name as a guy that I thought may give the Sunday thang a whirl. The boys clearly didn't see it as an option. I'm so tired of my voice being disregarded around here.

But I do see a chance. Not a great one, but a chance. This is not based on anything more than a gut feel.

Every year there's a dude or two who comes out and everyone says, "well, I guess he could be a good pro" and I think that it might be Royster this year.
Brian

MY STORY: I won the title for the 4th time in 6 years. Three WRs really carried my team the whole way as I was able to draft Percy Harvin and Jarett Dillard in the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively and then I landed Jeremy Maclin by trading away my 7th rounder Colin Kaepernick and free agent pickup Namaan Roosevelt in Week 3. Then I just rotated a bunch of sleeper backs when the matchups were right in Kendall Hunter, Evan Royster, and Vai Taua. Honestly my defense and special teams also allowed me to dominate at that position - Missouri put up as many points per game in our league as some top quarterbacks! Then at that point it didn't even matter that my first pick (Chase Holbrook) was a total bust because I just played the matchups and the waiver wire right, rotating totally average Joes like Bo Levi Mitchell, Adam Weber, Michael Desormeaux, and Todd Reesing (acquired via another trade after the truly spectacular games he put up). Each year it seems staying on top of the waiver wire really makes the difference but your starting advice was also very helpful.  - Reid, Cleveland 12/03/2008
Congrats Reid. Sounds like you've got this league pretty well in hand, hopefully it's a money league, right? I agree with you, if you play the waiver wire right, you can always find good match ups week to week. Obviously you had a couple studs, but rotating the open spots based on matches can work great. I enjoy leagues with limited roster moves better, but I've had more success in the open format, just because keeping up on all the waiver activity is kind of what we do. Jim

Tubs is out at AU as of 4:00  - sad to hear 12/03/2008
Interesting quagmire of events and back stories surrounding the resignation. We'll never get the full story. I think most "felt" this was coming as the season went on. Same with Bowden over at Clemson. It's a dangerously slippery slope when teams and fans "demand excellence".

I bet it wouldn't be sad to hear Mike Leach announced as you new coach ;). I think there is a legit chance that Leach could leave Ttech. We'll have to see how aggressive Tech is in keeping him,
Alex

Won the championship I didn't even end up drafting on CBS because my alarm didn't go off. Instead of using Zac Robinson as my QB, I picked up Robert Griffin off the waiver wire the first week, started him that week. We lost that first game but went on to win 11 games in a row due in part to GREAT waiver wire pick ups, (Jq. Rodgers, Shipley, Alabama D, Philip Welch). I'll be back to talk about this team in a few weeks that wins the championship over the bowl season.

I picked up Griffin by the way and rode him all the way in all three of my leagues.
 - Brian, TX 12/02/2008
Nice work. Hopefully it is a keeper league so you can hold onto Quizz and Griffin.Alex

Well you asked to hear from us league winners, so here I am. Our league doesn't allow for trades or waiver wire pick-ups so most of my work has to be done in the off-season. Tons of thanks to Alex for help in that category again this year. The '08 Championship trophy looks great next to the '07.

Our league puts a premium on Defenses. Keeper thoughts on Ohio State, LSU, and Wisconsin for next year? Keeping any of these will cost me 1st or 2nd round picks. Thanks.
 - Jason / St Louis 12/02/2008
Congrats! I love the league setup. It puts a premium on the draft.

We haven't started digging into defenses for next year yet. haven't really looked at returners on D yet. All 3 are going to lose significant players from their D. Laurnaitis is gone for OSU and Wisky and LSU lose a lot upfront. Right now I don't see any being worthy of 1st or 2nd round draft picks...especially when picks are a premium.
Alex

What do you guys expect out of Tony Pike, Jeremiah Masoli, and Jerrod Johnson?

Also, how will the LSU QB spot shake out next year, in your opinion? Do you think Jefferson is for real......I just felt that Miles was hesitant to say anything good about him, and maybe that is why they pushed hard to recruit good QB's.?.?
 - Jerry/LA 12/02/2008
As long as Kelly sticks around Pike would be my top pick from that group. Big arm and the right offense.

JJ is a solid looking fantasy prospect. With McGee out of the way the coaching staff should finaly officialy turnover the reigns to him...it was almost like they didn't want to do it last year. There were worse problems with the team that worrying about McGee coming back. With another year under his belt and spring ball JJ should only improve. And with the way A&M plays defense, they will need to score lots of points in 2008. Only fear, which was my fear when they hired Sherman, is they start to tank and people start calling for his head and the team gives up.

Too many factors go into Masoli's 2009 projections right now...will Blount stay? Will OC Chip Kelly be back? What about Roper...will be back in the mix come spring ball? Solid end to the season.

I would avoid the LSU QB situation. Like all youngsters, Jefferson has potential, but someone needs to step up and make some plays before I dip my toe in the LSU QB pond.
Alex

I just changed my team name to the Buffalo Bills after losing my second consecutive championship game. We have a keeper format that we can keep 3 players and their "cost" depends on what round they were drafted in or if they were a free agent pick-up. It is a 10 team league with each team keeping 3 players. Herer are my choices and what round pick in next season's draft each keeper would cost me.

Robert Griffin III-5th round
Tony Pike-5th round
Vai Taua-5th round
Bryce Beall-5th round
Michael Smith-5th round
Detron Lewis-8th round
Bo Levi Mitchell-9th round
Taylor Potts-10th round
Andre Anderson-10th round
Kellen Moore-10th round
Aldrick Robinson-10th round

If we keep players form the same round, it cost us the next round lower (ie. 2 10 rounders would cost me 10th and 11th). We have a QB heavy league which is why I hope Chase Holbrook NEVER plays again and is haunted by the memory of putting up nada against the stealt Utah State defense. Bye-Bye Hal Mummie. My gut reaction is Potts and BLM are no-brainers. The final spot is up for grabs, but it's hard for it not to be Kellen Moore, right. Appreciate your thoughts. Vai Taua-(Zwahili for I Like to Move it Move it.)
 - Paul/Miami 12/02/2008
It always takes a bit of luck once you get to the championship game. The accomplishment of getting there should not be overlooked. Nice work.

First off you are loaded at QB. How many QBs do you start? 1 or 2? I would try to unload Pike, Griffin, BLM or Moore for upgrades at RB/WR if possible.

If not and assuming you start 2 QBs I would probably keep Potts and Moore (toss up between him and BLM). I like Pike and Griff, but they come at a higher 'cost'. For the last spot I would keep either Taua, Alexander or Robinson. Obviously Alexander and Robinson come at a cheaper price. If you only start 1 QB, I would dump the 2nd QB and keep both I Like to Move it Move it or Alexander and Robinson.

Obv Alexander and Robinson status would need to be verified before you pull the trigger on either of them.
Alex

I just wanted to take the time and thank you Jim and everyone else for yalls help this year.I ended up finishing 1st in my league and 35th overall out of about 1500.Thanks for your help and I will talk to yall next year. What do yall think about Clemson hiring Dabo? I think he will do a good job. He's a firy kind of guy and gets the people excited.I just hope he has enough knowledge to do the job and do you think he will keep Brad Scott and Vic Koenning?  - Shane,Anderson,SC 12/01/2008
Nice work! I'll be sure to pass it on to Jim as I know he worked the AI more than I did this year.

I don't know much about Dabo besides his high energy persona. He also did a good job keeping that team together when they were on the verge of a meltdown, so he deserves his shot.

My guess is Swinney would keep as much of the staff as possible intact...after all they helped him keep the team together. Koenning and Scott have also been lobbying hard for Swinney in recent weeks.
Alex

Hey guys,

Just lost in the championship of my league in an ultimate duel (Keenum vs. Clement). Anyway, I am in a 16 team keeper league. We draft from all 120 schools but are limited to 4 pickups for the whole season. We can keep as many players as we want but not a D. Who would you keep from the following:
Andre Anderson -RB Tulane
Damion Fletcher -RB USM
Charles Scott -RB LSU
Ryan Broyles -WR OU
James Casey -TE Rice
Deon Murphy -WR K State

Thank you.

Tough break. At least you went to battle with a top QB. I assume you had Clement.

We'll I hate to say it but IMO Casey is as good as gone. Multi-talented athlete that NFL scouts will salivate over. When do you have to make a decision by? I would obv hold onto him until he announces his intentions.

Are there roster limits? If not I would keep the whole lot. If you have limited spots it becomes a bit more difficult as you have to weigh who will be available, needs, etc. The only bubble player I see is Murphy. I still like his upside though and would be inclined to keeping him without knowing all of the circumstances.

Didn't win the championship, but won our 2nd place "bowl." I now get the #2 pick in the draft. I owe MANY MANY thanks to this site for some excellent draft ideas (Frank Goodin), and waiver wire pickups (Tyron Carrier).

Thanks again!

Thanks Dewayne...let's get that championship next year!Alex

Here are a couple of questions that are about the future.

Who do you think will be the top rusher for Tulsa next year? Will it be Clay or Opey?

What are your guys thoughts about the Georgia and Alabama running back situations for next year?

Last one....Mike Ford - what the HECK is wrong and will they give him the ball next year??? Is he a keeper worthy player for next year?

I have my money on Clay. The spring will tell if he will move to a more permanent role in the backfield or continue to move around.

Georgia could be a bit messy with King and Samuel duking it out for the starting spot. I put my money on King, but Samuel has taken the lead lately so let's see how the spring shakes out. Obv I'm assuming Moreno goes pro.

The Bama situation will look much like it does this year. Unless for some odd reason Coffee gets it in his head to leave early...I don't see why, but stranger things have happened.

A number of factors come into play with Ford. First, the dude is flat out a very good running back. Second, last year Leavitt was not happy with his fumble problems and lack of pass blocking skills...he got Grothe killed a couple of times. Third, he's been hobbled all year with an ankle injury. Fourth, I still question SoFl's lack of a commitment to a run game (with their running backs)...but that could change if Grothe doesn't stick around, he'd be silly to go pro, but he is talking about it.

In a nutshell if it doesn't cost you anything, I would keep him because he has potential. If it costs you picks or are limited in what you can keep, throw him back and redraft in the late rounds.

IMO Clay is the only one I would keep without reservation.
