Having the first pick in a college fantasy football draft is both a blessing and a curse. Sure you get first crack at the talent, but you have to wait a LONG time before the snake comes back to you. I found myself having to adapt and adjust my drafting strategy throughout the draft.
Round 1 -- Jacquizz Rodgers
This pick required some thought. It would have been nice to lock down the QB spot with Jerrod Johnson, but I felt that I could get a quality QB in later rounds. I was also sure that there wouldn't be an elite RB left at pick 20 when I got my next pick.
Round 2 -- Jeff Fuller
I was happy to grab Fuller with the 20th pick. The elite running backs were gone and I with JJ slated to have a big year as a QB, it just makes sense that Fuller will come along for the ride. He's a top-three BCS WR, so I'm glad to have him.
Round 3 -- James Rodgers
This is a questionable choice. I had Rodgers at the top of the WR board and quite a few RBs had been taken, so I gambled that there would be a decent RB when my picks came around again. The pick did give me the honor of having both Rodgers brothers on my roster... I'll admit that played into the decision. Anyway, it's nice to have a proven commodity at WR.
Round 4 -- Ryan Mallett
I was content to wait as long as possible to draft a QB, and really needed a running back here. But, since my league-mates were hoarding running backs, I didn't think there was a running back that had the value of Mallett. I'm not as high on Mallett as many, but there looked to be a big drop off after this point. I was counting on Landry Jones slipping a bit more and snapping him up...but Erik grabbed him first.
Round 5 -- Ohio State Defense
Again, the hoarding of running backs by others led me to look to other positions. Instead of choosing one out of ten comparable RBs here, I grabbed the number one defense and took the probable point differential advantage here. Defensive scoring is important in this league. I was thinking Allen Bradford would fall to me here, but forgot about PAC 10 slappy Tyler.
Round 6 -- Kendall Wright
Still need an RB. Rodney Stewart was in my queu, but Chris snapped him up one pick before mine. I'm looking at 10-20 RBs that are roughly equal...and none of them sure things. Since my league-mates are hoarding RBs, I couldn't just sit there and let them have their pick of top-line WRs. I like WRs that are the clear-cut main targets for their team. Wright fits the bill here.
Round 7 -- Jerrell Jackson
While it probably isn't as clear-cut, JJ should be the number one guy for Mizzou this year. I'm happy to have four starting caliber WRs at this point.
Round 8 -- Moise Plancher
The chickens have come home to roost. I like my roster, but there is still that glaring weakness at RB. Plancher is no sure thing, but he's definitely a candidate for a big season with a new coaching staff that should stress the running game a bit more.
Round 9 -- Toben Opurum
Opurum isn't even a sure thing to be the starter for the Jayhawks, but he has potential to post big numbers under Turner Gill.
Round 10 -- Al-Terek McBurse
With Ralph Bolden out for the year, McBurse is another potential guy.
Round 11 -- Mario Fannin
Potential... So the battle for my RB2 spot is between Plancher, Opurum, McBurse and Fannin. Each of these guys is in a situation that will give him the opportunity to surprise this year. I'm looking for one or two of them to hit, but it could make for a long season of mixing and matching each week.
Round 12 -- Justin Kahut
I'm not overly concerned about the kicker position, but I like to have a solid guy that has a track record and is somewhat reliable. I'd rather pick that guy a round or two early than have my kicker dictated to me by the draft. Also, another Beaver on the roster!
Round 13 -- Kirk Cousins
I looked at quite a few QBs for a backup. Cousins' schedule meshes well with Mallett's, so I scooped him up. I wanted to grab Jordan Reed as my tight end, but I was worried that Chris needed a QB, and didn't like how the remaining choices fit with Mallett.
Round 14 -- Mike McNeill
I had to fill the roster and I'm happy to have McNeill around as my TE choice. Especially with him playing WR this year!
