USC and Arizona have brought excitement to fantasy owners already and now we look at the rest of the action in the Pac 10 this weekend. Here is what and who to watch for.
UCLA at Kansas St , Saturday at 3:30 pm EST
What to watch for : The Pistol offense. Can the Bruins use their new formation to generate offense and ultimately points? The early returns during practice say the running game should be better but the passing game is still an uncertainty. QB Kevin Prince has missed a ton of practice and remains a game-time decision although he is expected to start.
Who to watch for : RB Malcolm Jones. Kansas State had a pretty good running defense last year giving up only 105 yards on the ground but UCLA was able to put up 173 rushing yards against them. They will need to do that again to win in Manhattan with Prince banged up and Kai Forbath possibly missing the game. Jones won’t start but he shined this fall and could be the difference maker on offense that the Bruins will need this year to get to a bowl game.
New Mexico at Oregon , Saturday at 3:30 pm EST
What to watch for : The triggerman. Can newly appointed quarterback Darron Thomas keep the offensive hitting on all cylinders? The Ducks should be able to score at will as New Mexico gave up 36 points per game last season. It will be up to Thomas to show the ability to throw to keep defenses in the future from ganging up on the run. If he can limit his turnovers he could be fantasy steal this year.
Who to watch for : RB Kenjon Barner. He gets his chance to take over as the lead back with LaMichael James suspended for the opener. Barner has been blowing up since the Rose Bowl last year and even has some James owners fearing the dreaded timeshare. If he goes for 150+ yards in this one, he can all but cement getting around 10 touches per game going forward.
UC Davis at California , Saturday at 4:00 pm EST
What to watch for : The Bears running attack. Everyone knows that Shane Vereen is a stud but what about the other backs? Isi Sofele won the backup job this fall and should have considerable value in Pac 10 leagues. We know he can make the explosive play but can he grind out the tough yards between the tackles with his smaller stature. Also, will a bigger back become a goal line threat this season?
Who to watch for : WR Keenan Allen. What’s not to be excited about when a five-star talent earns a starting spot in his first collegiate game? The Bears desperately need someone to step up and be a threat opposite Marvin Jones in the passing game to take pressure off QB Kevin Riley. Allen’s size should provide the offense a nice threat in the red zone.
Sacramento State at Stanford , Saturday at 6:30 pm EST
What to watch for : Offensive Balance. Can the Cardinal continue the offensive balance that made them so hard to defend last year? They were one of six teams in the nation that averaged over 200 yards rushing and passing per game last season. The temptation might be just to have Andrew Luck chuck it 30 times but they will need the running game to produce if they are going to score 35 points a game again.
Who to watch for : RB Jeremy Stewart. The senior was praised throughout fall camp for his ability to pass protect and may have earned himself the starting job. He is listed as a co-starter with Stepfan Taylor and it will be interesting to see how the carries play out. There are plenty of options in the backfield so this could be a committee to avoid all season or someone could step up and become a must-start fantasy player.
Washington at BYU , Saturday at 7:00 pm EST
What to watch for : Revenge. The Huskies lost by one point after a ridiculous celebration penalty forced a long PAT that was blocked. That game will be on the minds of everyone on the field tomorrow night especially Jake Locker since he was flagged for that penalty. Locker can make all those hard feelings go away with a win in Provo. It won’t be easy as the Huskies went 0-5 on the road last year and haven’t won away from Seattle since 2007.
Who to watch for : Why Locker of course. He has been the talk of the Pac 10 all summer long and even has been getting some Heisman attention. All of that will mean nothing if he can’t lead his team to a win in Provo and eventually a bowl game. It is time for him to show the scouts that he is not only talented but also a winner. He can also take a big step forward in the fantasy world if he can show the consistently of most top tier options.
Washington State at Oklahoma State , Saturday at 7:00 pm EST
What to watch for : Playmakers. Washington State has not only been a terrible team in the standings recently but a must avoid in fantasy circles as well. They don’t have anyone who is an option in BCS leagues but they are also an afterthought in Pac 10 only leagues as well. Don’t be one of those fantasy owners that ignore the Cougars. There are some potential steals on this team. QB Jeff Tuel showed some ability last season and the Palouse has been abuzz about true freshman WR Marquess Wilson.
Who to watch for : RB James Montgomery. He was supposed to be the workhouse last season but suffered a leg injury during the third game that almost led to an amputation. He worked his tail off all offseason and is listed atop the depth chart for the opener. Not only is it a great story of hard work but he could be of great use in Pac 10 only leagues if he shows that he is completely healthy.
Oregon State at TCU , Saturday at 7:45 pm EST
What to watch for : Jacquizz Rodgers versus TCU’s run defense. The Horned Frogs finished third in the nation in rush defense last year allowing a paltry 80.2 yards per game. The Beavers (and fantasy owners alike) will need to have a big game from Quizz if they are to win this weekend. He may not top 100 rushing yards but his ability out of the backfield as a receiver should keep the fantasy points piling up.
Who to watch for : QB Ryan Katz. He played well this spring and continued that success during fall camp but playing at Cowboys Stadium against the Horned Frog defense is a different animal. Katz will need to show patience and poise because there won’t be many opportunities for big plays. This isn’t an ideal opener for a green quarterback but the Rodgers brothers are a nice security blanket.
Portland State at Arizona State , Saturday at 10:15 pm EST
What to watch for : Aerial assault. Will the Sun Devils new offensive philosophy generate more points? The new plan of attack is to air it out early and often. QB Steven Threet will start but Brock Osweiler is expected to play as well. If they can’t put 40+ points up on FCS Portland State that could spell trouble this season scoring in conference games.
Who to watch for : RB Deantre Lewis. While he isn’t going to start the game, the Sun Devils are going to find ways to get the ball into the hands of its most explosive player. The true freshman has been terrorizing the Sun Devil defense during fall camp with his ability to make defenders miss in space. He is the home run hitter that could make this attack lethal if the offensive line holds up.
