One Big 12 game down and 11 to go after Iowa State knocked off Northern Illinois on Thursday night.  To get you ready for a full slate of action on Saturday, here are a few quick news and notes and then my Friday 6-pack of bold predictions for the weekend.

News and Notes

  • True freshman Brennan Clay will back up DeMarco Murray for the Sooners this week with Mossis Madu suspended.  He'll definitely see action in what is expected to be a blowout.
  • Kansas coach Turner Gill has alluded to the possibility of playing backup QB Jordan Webb in the first half against North Dakota State.  This isn't a ringing endorsement for Kale Pick, who was just named the starter last week.  Let's hope you're not placing your fantasy future in the hands of the Jayhawk passing game.
  • Missouri running backs Kendial Lawrence and De'Vion Moore are expected to split carries against Illinois.  They're filling in for the suspended Derrick Washington, but the even split makes it tough to put either one in your lineup.

Friday 6-Pack

  1. Blaine Gabbert will throw for at least 350 yards and three scores.  Illinois' secondary wasn't projected to be a strength to start with, but a rash of injuries have left them extremely vulnerable to a potent passing attack.  Without Washington, the Tigers will rely on the arm of Gabbert who I expect to have no shortage of open receivers.  In addition, Mizzou's defense should give up just enough points to keep Gabbert on the field.  As for who the beneficiaries are on the receiving end, I like T.J. Moe and Michael Egnew to find the end zone.
  2. Cody Johnson will rush for 100 yards and two TDs.  I've been as skeptical as anyone with all this talk of Texas' commitment to the running game, but seeing Johnson atop the depth chart has me believing.  He showed a nose for the end zone last season, and the new slimmer version of CJ should find plenty of running room against the Owls, who ranked among the worst in the nation at stopping the run last year.
  3. Nebraska's starting quarterback will be revealed.  OK, maybe this one isn't so bold, but given the mystery surrounding the situation, I need to see it to believe it.  Who knows, maybe they'll line up Rex Burkhead in the Wildcat to start things off.  I'll go on record as saying it will be Taylor Martinez, who brings a unique set of skills to the position.  Regardless, I look for RBs Roy Helu and the aforementioned Burkhead to each get at least 90 yards and a score against a Western Kentucky squad who surrended nearly 245 rushing yards per game last season.
  4. Tracy Moore will post the best fantasy numbers of any Oklahoma State wide receiver.  We know the Pokes will throw it a ton against what is arguably the worst BCS team in the nation, Washington State.  What we don't know is who will be on the receiving end, particularly with Hubert Anyiam not on the two-deep.  I'll take my chances with Moore, who has great size in the red zone and has shown great hands throughout the offseason.
  5. Mark down Lanear Sampson for 90 yards and a TD.  I think Robert Griffin bursts back onto the scene in a big way versus Sam Houston State, and his favorite target is sure to be Kendall Wright.  However, Sampson, a speedy sophomore, has shown a knack for making big plays and scoring touchdowns during Baylor's scrimmages.
  6. Angus Quigley will rack up 100 yards and two scores.  I saved the sixth spot for a sixth-year senior.  Quigley has been give a new lease on his football life by Turner Gill, and he should make the most of it against North Dakota State.  The Jayhawks are expected to be a run-first team, and Quigley should get the bulk of the work, which I expect to lead to a nice fantasy day.

Enjoy the games this weekend.  I'll check back in on Sunday with this week's studs and duds.  And if any of these predictions actually came true, I'll talk about that too.
