QB Drew Brees, Purdue
HOF Class:
2000
Thanks to the likes of Len Dawson, Bob Griese, Gary Danielson, Mark Herrmann and Jim Everett, Purdue fans had seen their share of talented quarterbacks come through West Lafayette. However Boiler faithful had little knowledge of the type of quarterback production they were about to see when the Austin Westlake prep star joined forces with this new wacky offensive coach from Wyoming who also moonlighted as oatmeal spokesman.
Why:
Joe Tiller and Drew Brees turned the “three yards and a cloud of dust” Big Ten on its ears. "Basketball on Grass" was born and the Big Ten has never been the same. In his first full year as starter he was the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He threw for nearly 4000 yards and 39 scores. His next two seasons didn’t match his sophomore season, but by the time he walked across the stage he held every meaningful passing record in Big Ten history.
Yes we are bending the rules slightly for Mr. Brees, but he did end his career in 2000, so he is in.
The numbers:
Where to start? He’s the all-time conference leader in pass completions (1026), passing yards (11792) and touchdowns (90). Taken directly from Purdue’s
official athletic website
, Brees posted two games with 500+ yards, seven games with 400+ yards, 16 games with 300+ yards and 27 games with over 250 yards passing. His ability to wing it or tuck it and run was a great precursor to what was to come with the likes of Zak Kustok and Troy Smith.
Signature moment:
Fresh off a win over Michigan, and sitting pretty at 6-0, Michigan State traveled to West Lafayette in mid-October of 1999. Nick Saban is still waking up in cold sweats over what transpired. Operating with pinpoint accuracy, Brees shredded the Spartan secondary. The fact that he went 40-59 for 509 yards and five touchdowns wasn’t bad enough. The field general, in a sharing mood, decided to bring wide receiver Chris Daniels along for a record-setting ride. Daniels caught a remarkable 21 balls for 301 yards receiving and three scores as the Boilers rolled to a 52-28 win.
Final thought:
Along with Joe Tiller, Drew Brees made young Boiler fans believe that fall wasn’t just time to pass until Gene Keady’s boys took the court. Brees changed the way the Big Ten game was played, and fantasy owners of Brees were screaming Boiler Up! with reckless abandon.
Career Stats:
11,792 yards pass, 90 TDs pass, 900 yards rush & 14 TDs rushing
