Michigan running back Vincent Smith, who carried nine times for 118 yards against Eastern Michigan, could earn the start this week against San Diego State.
Coach Brady Hoke said Smith has earned the right to start, and he has been productive. It's hard to recommend a running back from Michigan until there is a consistent starter.
