Michigan State came into the weekend No.1 in the nation in total defense and they remain there after holding Ohio State to just 173 yards in total offense. The Spartans also registered nine sacks and picked off young Braxton Miller once. A late touchdown pass from Joe Bauserman to Evan Spencer was the only thing that spoiled the shutout at the Horseshoe.
You can make a case that the schedule has much to do with the Spartans' ranking, however, they've done what they've needed to do to earn the lofty ranking. Even in the loss to Notre Dame, the Spartans only gave up 275 yards in total offense. The schedule will get much tougher from here on out and the Spartans are unlikely to sit atop the rankings for long. But for now, they own bragging rights.
